so i'm in the process of doing a piece of assessment, and i need to plot GPS data onto a map of SE Spain,

does anyone know of any software that can be used to do this easily? i've looked at gpsvisualizer, but i can't get it to work...

any help would be appreciated!

Google Earth will able you to plot points, and it properly the easiest to use. But as said ArcGIS (or any GIS) will also allow to plot point on a map but can get a bit complicated if you havn't used it before or had no training in it. What co-ordinate system are the points in?

i do have access to ArcGIS, I've tried to install a cracked copy on my computer, but have twice been unsuccessful. I have coordinate data and longitude/latitude data.
can anyone tell me how to plot them on Google earth?? I've had a play around and can't work it out...

Which coordinate system though?

EUR50? WGS84? ETRS89?

Can't you go to Add>Placemark and then just put in your long/lat coordinates?

Is ArcGIS really involved or simple enough to pick up? I'd quite like to have a stab at teaching myself GIS soon.

All depends what your trying to do with it. But it can be self taught. I had a few lectures on how to use it but the majority of it was just sitting done and having a go.

At a basic level, Google Earth, Google Maps and Bing Maps can all do it.

For slightly more advanced stuff but less involved than ArcGIS, Microsoft MapPoint might do what you're after.

The majority of GIS programs are really quite simple when you get into them, they have reasonably comprehensive shortcuts/menus. Learning specific queries can take a bit longer but all in I was surprised at how quickly someone with no experience of GIS can get to grips with it.
