(ok I know I posted this in the Mobiles forum but I realise now that was TOTALY the wrong place, can a frendly don please delete that one!)
ok, I'm in the market for some GPS in car stuff, don't know if I wanna go PDA or just a TomTom all in one unit.

any idea what kinda prices are each going to start at, and whats the advantages/dissadvantages?

not sure if I'd use the PDA much but I don't know as I've never had one before, may be helpful having a electronic address/phone book on me rather than a paper one like I have now.

also whats the advantage of the TomTom GO 700 over the 500? is it bigger? faster?

so quote me hippy guys!

It depends what you want it for. Do you want your GPS system to act as a pda as well (diary etc) then get one of the PDS's with built in GPS. If not just get the tom tom.

I think the difference in models (tom tom) is that the higher end ones have more mapping capabilities (europe etc) and more memory.

I am unsure about this but I *think* some of them charge you a monthly sub for updates. I may be wrong or maybe all of them do? (This may factor into which one you buy) Even If I am wrong it would still be worth looking into it though.

think I'll just go for the tomtom then

but what one?

I like the look of the 700, am I right in thinking that this is the only one with a wadge of internal memory?

I *think* it has double the internal memory of the 500 (128/64) although I am not 100%.

The extra memory is handy as it can make it update quicker. However if the cost is condierably more I don't think it is justifiable unless you are going to be doing some long journeys.

Just a more basic version of the GO300 I belive.

I think it has limited memory cmpared to other models.

Although it is considerably cheaper.

A good place to check is somewhere like Halfords as you could ask to see what one is like 'in action'.

I also believe the 'one' has a smaller screen so maybe be harder to see.

I got me a Garmin i3 from halfords (almost sure thats not a competitor) for £110 due to my mate working there with the family discount thingy. Gotta admit i don't use it 'that' much but at least once a week and when i do its great. Runs on 2 AA batteries or car adaptor that comes with it. I leave it on just view map mode normally then if you're unsure how to get home you just press a few buttons and it sends you back with clear display and clear/ loud voice prompts. I was thinking of going for a pda combo but im glad i got the garmin, less hassle and an excellent unit for ther price.

the TT 500 and 700 are due for imminent replacement by the 510 and 710

I am tempted to ge one of these but the security implications are getting serious now , the need to remove the mount ( and maybe even wipe the windscreen ) at the end of every journey would get tedious, the manufacturers need to do something quickly to make the units more secure

OK got the 700, its all nice and everything but where can I get all these free speed camera things etc that everyone talks about?
