Looking at getting SatNav for my car which im getting soon :)

I'm getting a new phone on an upgrade which can handle TomTom Mobile 5 and i can buy a BT GPS device.

Is this any good or should i plump out for a NavMan 510 or similar?

I'm not a lover of the TomTom units as they are big compared to the Navman's but how does it fair on a phone?

Thanks,

Andy

Ive been using Tomtom for years now and I find it very good. Not without faults, but I wouldnt go with another system now.

I've found TT5 very good in general although it does make some very odd routing choices far too often for my liking and the maps can get quite out of date (only today it told me to turn right where the right turn was removed about 2 years ago!) The ability to integrate speed camera warnings is also useful.

I will be kissing goodbye to it in a few months when my new car arrives. I've actually seen quite a few people say that they prefer TT to their car's OEM systems but personally I can't wait to get rid of the the hassle and paraphernalia associate with the PDA solution and have something that's "just there".

(If anyone is after a bluetooth GPS unit around December, watch the MM :))

Ditto - this is my only gripe with PDA TomTom.

I can see the problems going down the pda route but I've ran tom tom on my nokia 6680 for the last year and think its a great solution.
wherever I go either in the car or on foot I always have my phone with me so if I can add another string to my handsets bow then so be it.
screen size on the 6680 never felt like it needed to be larger at any time and coupled with my BT earpiece for the vocal commands and IMHO it makes an ideal jack of all trades.
I must add that at no time did I ever feel that I would've benefitted from a dedicated sat nav system or even just a larger screen.

as a footnote i'd add that in our wonderful modern society even the sight of suction marks left behind by a tomtom unit or the like is enough to make some low life smash their way into a car, whereas my nokia sits in a dirt cheap taiwananese made cradle that clips onto an air vent...and simply drops into the glovebox when not in use leaving no tell-tale window marks.

Even better TomTom Nav 6 is out now, haven't installed it just yet though.
Only on the all-in-one units, there's no V6 update for PDAs and it's looking likely that there never will be.

This is how my car got done a while back, took the lot as i was foolish enough to leave it all in the boot :(

Now i use a mobile, works well apart from the fact the nokia N70 has the worst BT implementation ever grrrr

There will be a TT6 for PDA`s its on the website, unfortunately pirated versions are out already.

I can see what you mean tho vertigo, its great having a system ready to go, a lad at work has a dedicated sat nav system in his 406, whilst it doesnt offer anymore features than the TomTom setup (TT is far better) its nice having a system all there with out faffing around with turning on a BT gps, and plugging a charger in etc!

I would have got it in my ST but the 2k option was simply extortionate.

So everyone agrees that a solution for my phone will be the best thing.

I'm getting a S.Ericsson W950i which is the same OS as the P910 etc.... which tom tom can run on.
