Picked up a used 7950 for my second machine.

System refuses to boot. With the card installed, it gives one long beep and 3 beeps for no vga and the red light by the pcie socket comes on along with the led for boot device error.

According to Asus that is VGA error.

The system it's in is not new, it's a rev1 Sabertooth 990fx on the latest bios (1604). The 7950 and board aren't that far apart in years and I've seen people say they use newer cards on this board. Also most reporting that cards aren't working seem to report just a black screen, not the vga error beeps.

Put the old 5850 back in and it's fine.

PSU in the machine is a Bequiet purepower 9 500W silver. I would think that is enough to power a 7950.

Any ideas? I do have a much newer machine I can test in (my main system), but it's a ton of hassle to wrestle the 290 vapor-x out, so thought I'd ask before I go down that route.

Thanks.

Normally not enough power to the graphics card, daft question but have you plugged it in?
Either that or the cards knackered.

Yeah, it's all plugged in. First thing I checked.

I do have a hx750i that I took out from my main system for coil whine. Think it came with a bridge for the main the atx connector (so you can test it without the pc), would it be ok to have that power just the gpu to test? Rather than having to take the whole other supply out.

Well, the card is ok.

Tried in my X99 system with a Seasonic X-750 and it boots fine, no issues.

Tried it back in the 990FX with the HX750i on the gpu and still 4 beep. Will try with the 750i fully hooked up later then.

If not, guess I'll just have to resell it :(. Really odd that I see reports of others using things like 290s on the same board and bios. Seen other people using 7950 with this board as well, but this just sits there. Maybe the 750i will sort it, but not hopeful.

Ok, I guess the board and card are just not getting on.

I tried with the hx750i fully hooked up and it still gives 4 beeps with the VGA error light on.

I tried the card in two different slots and reset the cmos and still, 4 beeps. Put the 5850 back in and it boots fine.

The card is definitely fine as well, as it boots up and works fine in my Gigabtye X99-sli motherboard. 0 issues, works fine.

Any ideas. 1604 is the last bios for a rev1 sabertooth, I've seen others say they are using newer cards in it, I've even seen people with the r1 and 7950s working fine, although a different brand.

This is a His iceQ 7950. Just unlucky and bought the one that doesn't work in this board? or anything else I can try? If not, guess I'll cut my losses and resell.

Thanks.
