HI all,

I know this has probably been asked to death, so I appologise up front for asking something similar again.

I have pulled the trigger on a I7 920 rig and am now deliberating what GPU to pair with it. Mostly I will be looking for good gaming at 1900x1080.

I have narrowed it down to the 4890 (old tech but cheap) or the new 5870 (new but expensive). Budget is not really an issue, but value for money certainly is.

So the question is simple. Is the 5870 worth the extra money at the moment.

Thanks for any input you can give me.

most new games that use dx11 will run dx9 also, such as dirt 2 so I haven't had the need to really look at any 5000 series.... saying that the new 2gb's are tempting but I'm more than happy with my 4890 2gb

I would say the 4890 is a good choice. Plays every game on amx with no problems. I wouldn't get the 5870 tho for the price, the 5850 or 5770 in crossfire would be good for around £240

5870 as you can add a second later for when 5870 starts to look more like a 3870 does at this point in time.

Down to what you want to spend, £120 for the 4890, £350 for the 5870. The 4890 will handle the res you want with ease. For me the price difference far outweighs the performance difference, that's £250 to spend on something else.

Money no object? go with the 5870 as the 4890 will eventually become your weakest link.

Or go with the 4890, wait for prices to drop/see if DX11 is a big deal and then upgrade :)

Personally I'd go with the latter. My 4890 rocking my games ;)

Im in the process or thinking what i should upgrade to and graphics wise im between the 4890 and 5770.

The 5770 seems to be between the 4870 and 4890 performance wise but people seem to suggest the 5770 will see gains in the new drivers being released december or near future.

Thing that attracts me more to the 5770 is the power useage as its quite abit lower than older cards.

Its not that i can't afford a 5890 or the likes, its just i wont allow my self to buy something that does not justifie the price tag.

As for the rest of my build i've no idea where to go processor and mobo wise, not been following the hardware scene for sometime now, dont get much time to just chill with all this overtime at sodding work :(.
