GPU - 680 or 770

Hi guys,

Looking for some advice on getting a GPU upgrade. Currently running a Gigabyte Z87OC board with a 4670K and a GTX590.

I think the best step forward would be one of the above, but not sure which. I generally game at 1680x1050 if that would make a difference between them. I'm not expecting it to last forever, but would like a bit more grunt when playing ARMA2 and BF4.

Thanks in advance :)

770 is like a new and improved 680. Overclocks pretty nicely I'm finding.

Performance is similar, although the faster memory of the 770 does help it eek out a few FPS here and there. Depends on the prices you can find them at.

Hi,

The 770 is just a better card on all accounts. The only 680 I could reccomend if you can find it cheap enough is the EVGA 680GTX Classified 4GB. Just on the grounds it's a fantastic card :)

Besides that, for the resolution you're playing at the 770 offers better performance than the 680. It's marginal in some games, but it's still faster.

It's the same GPU, just higher reference clocks.

At your resolution you'd be better off with a much cheaper 7950, especially for BF4.

Get the GTX 770, I checked it out on hardware compare/ bit tech and it beats the 680 in most of the tests. It does however have a higher power draw than the 680.

Also, isn't there the new Nvidia video capture thingy coming out for the 770? or is it both 770 and 680?

Thanks for the replies, chaps.

Would anyone recommend the latest AMD GPU's? I've not researched them too much, admittedly but they seem good on paper?

Atm AMD GPU's are providing better bang for buck, if you can nab a 7970 for around £220 then I certainly would do it :)

These are selling out fast

It is one of the more expensive HD 7970s but also one of the fastest and a lot of fun. It's also cheaper and faster than a GTX 770.

The other HD 7950s and 7970s are also great value for money.

If your set on getting either of those cards, you have to go for the newer 770, it's basically a 680 with turbocharged memory. However if your open to other sugestions then I'd go for the card I chose . . . The 7970 Matrix Platinum as previously mentioned :D

The 7970 matrix looks good, although the review I just read, the 590 outperforms it in almost every game (albeit by 3-5%). That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me!

590 is a dual gpu card. Sli on a stick. Very little reason to upgrade that card atm unless you are after less power consumption. Only a 780 or a titan would make a noticeable difference - especially at the resolution you play.

So far no problems. I think a better option might be to update my monitor and get something that will run at 1080. Put a bit more load on the GPUs. It's all very counter-intuitive, but I guess I'm not getting the most out of the card by a long shot.

Keep what you have, unless dual gpu is proving troublesome for you.

Best advice in this thread IMO.

A 590 should be very close to a 770/7970 and with the resolution the OP games at, I am sure the 1.5GB is coping just fine.
