Hi Everyone,

Just a quick question in regards to my upgrade path.

Now i am looking to upgrade my GPU as it seems to be the bottleneck on my rig at the moment although i am unsure of the best path to take.

Games i will mainly be playing:
GTA5
Hardline

And anything worth playing in the future.

Below is my setup as per my sig:

i7-4770K | GTX 780 iChill 6GB 16GB @ 1600MHz | Asus ROG SWIFT

Now as i have the ROG Swift i will be sticking to NVIDIA for obvious reasons (G-SYNC).

My question is, to play these above games at max settings with high FPS what would my best upgrade path be?

SLI 980's or Wait for a single 980TI, then in the future grab another for SLI 980TI's?

Do you think i will run into vram issues in the near future if i grab the to 980's @4gb per card?

I was thinking the Titan X would be on the cards but after the benchmarks were released along with the price i do not feel this would be the right step for me to take in terms of cost v performance. (not mocking Titan X Buyers, Congrats on your cards!)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

Hardline will have mantle.......GTA5 we don't know if it will be a mess like GTA4 was or not.......

honestly; with more cards just around the corner; snag a used 970 for now and see what falls in the new few months specially with prices.....

Mantle is out of the question as i want to utilise G-SYNC :) never been a fan of AMD's driver support either, but that's for another thread ;)

I've had issues with both drivers......more recently with Nvidia than AMD but :D miles vary; like I said snag a used 970 for now; wait for dust to settle after 390 is released......:) prices will drop on things

while I am amd fan; *had to deal with Nvidia business practices in the past which leaves a bad taste in anyone's mouth* but I will recommended in situations like yours.

:)

Hahah, well judging by some reviews a 780 is not far behind most of the 970s at all, plus my 780 having the extra vram, up to 6gb i don't think the upgrade from the 780 to 970 would be justified especially losing just over half the vram as well.

If i have to i will be able to stick with my 780 until future releases, although i was hoping to be reading for gta5+hardline release. although i can be paitent in terms of a ~1k gpu upgrade :)

If you've got 1k to spend go get a Titan!!!

But seriously, you don't need 2x980 for the RoG Swift. You can have a good g sync experience with just one with playable fps. Also, I don't think a 980 is not that much better than a 780 unless a lower power efficiency is what tickles your fancy. But tbh, I don't see anything wrong with your 780 for now.

Well at the moment i am pulling ~60fps on bf4 ultra settings no msaa. it holds 60 for a while but now an then it drops to the mid 50's but it is noticeable which is irritating.

Judging by the above i have a feeling hardline will be a bit more demanding, and ofcourse gta5 will eat my 780 up if i want to play it at a respectable level. (quality wise)

I want to get the most out of my swift, but i can be patient in regards to this, so if holding onto this 780 is the best option that's no problem.

Although it would be still great to know what i will be / should be aiming for in the long run, that being a 980ti sli or not etc

I will be holding off the Titan due to the price v performance when by the looks of it 2x980's can keep up with this if not surpass in different circumstances.

But that again is going on the current benchmarks which doesn't take into account all circumstances :D

Cheers mate

Looking to OC my cpu either this month or next. still sat with stock clock @3.50 which is pretty sad as these chips apparently clock VERY well. i can see yours is @4.4 :)

In regards to the GPU that is also an option, i was probably going to sell this card and OCing it would make it harder i believe. but that is still a option:)

I wouldn't bother wasting your money if I was you.

Edit: I think the 980's are overhyped myself. Got one yesterday and can't say I'm blown away by the performance. At stock clocks it only beats my R9 290 by several hundred points in 3DMark. Maybe I will see some magic when I overclock it, but at the minute it feels like I just wasted half a grand.

If you can hold out for a few months with the 780 that would be the best idea IMO. It's hard to recommend getting a 980 when a cut down Titan X is due, especially to compete with the 390 series price/performance. The main Titan X cares not for the logic of price/performance.

This cut down Titan X should be the true successor to your 780 as it will be part of the big chip Maxwell unlike the 980.

If you become really impatient wait a month or so and get an EVGA 980, because you can use step up if you wish, as long as you register the card within 14 days of purchase with EVGA. The 90 days step up should cover most of the time frame for the likely release of the 390 series and cut down Titan X. The process of sending them the old GPU and everything could be a bit long winded and avoided if you can just hold out though.

Think i will try and be patient and go with this option, last resort go for the 980 on the 90 day upgrade path as you said with EVGA.

Cheers for the responses everyone
