Looking for some advice about GPUs - I know you guys are very knowledgeable about hardware. Here's my machine:

Asus P5K Pro
Q6600 @ 3Ghz
4GB DDR2
GPU: 9800GTX
Win7 x64

Very stable system with current overclock, low operating temperatures, no real issues gaming (my principal use.)

Just bought a reconditioned Dell 2709W which should be arriving today.

I'm seriously considering a new graphics card, although I don't really want to spend more than £250-300. I'm in no desperate rush, and would quite like to wait and see what the new GTX360 is going to be priced at, and what effect that release has on the after Christmas market.

I'd like some input on what GPUs I should be looking at, and whether a £300 card in January might be wasted teamed up with my ageing processor.

A 5850 would be ideal upgrade for you and you'd have some cash left over, the new NVidia cards could be a few months yet and will probably be more expensive than ATI counterparts as they usually are.

Unles syou need it I would stick and see how fermi affects the market. I think you are good for a while with the rest of your build. I only upgrade when I am having problems with games on my current system.

If you are tempted you should be getting about £50 for your current 9800GTX. I wouldn't invest in something that would provide only a small boost though. For £300 a second hand GTX295 perhaps? or a 5870 if the prices stabilise.

As others have said, if you buy one of the new ATI cards you'll pay for it due to short supply and no real competition. The main advantage for people who don't actually want to buy Femi is that the most positive effect is it'll drive the ATI card prices down, naturally this requires NV to actually release a product.

As for your processor, it is fine.

The choice is yours :)
