Hi all,

I currently have a EVGA 1070ti SC, this is paired to a 32" Odyssey G7.

Should I pull the trigger and buy a 3070 as there's stock available (ROG Strix/MSI Suprim) or wait and hope that the prices fall?

Thanks :)

Only you can make that call.

If the 1070ti is offering acceptable performance for you right now, based on what you use it for and the settings you have configured, then why pay inflated prices if you don't need to.

It's a value judgement. But don't expect prices to fall quickly or by huge amounts. Yes, they will drift down but it may take time, and who knows what the new norm will be. You could be waiting months, years or possibly forever for them to return to what was considered the norm 12 months ago.

As kjaerligkatt said it's a value judgement, and it's personal to you and how you weight the benefit of that hardware vs how much impact those prices are on your finances. All I can say is that I'd personally not do it myself unless my GPU died entirely and I didn't have any other replacement. But purely for an upgrade, no way.

Don't expect prices to come down too fast though, I think any stock you find will be at these levels for many more months to come and when they do trend down it'll be painfully slow unless something drastic happens. I personally don't think you'll ever see a 3000 series card at RRP ever again, I think 4000 series will be out before we're anywhere close to getting back to RRP.

£900+ ouch! No idea what a s/h 2080ti would cost as an option? Extra vram nice to have too.

I paid
300 for 5600
130 for mobo
100 for a ram
130 psu
50 ssd
65 for a case.

So gpu would cost more then entire pc. Sad day for pc enthusiasts.

Only way to get prices back down is if customers refuse to pay these prices. If gamers refuse to buy at these prices then Nvidia/AMD and partners will realise that this was mainly a mining boom and have no choice but to lower prices if mining isn't attractive at these prices

some one will buy. unfortunately.

GPU's hold entire pc scene at a gun point.

Sorry, but this is just so naive. Yes, some of the prices being seen are opportunistic, but costs have fundamentally changed over the last 12 months for ALL industries. With a cost base significantly on the rise, combined with supply & demand challenges, you have a perfect storm.

Neither of these situations will change massively anytime soon. Yes, there will be some improvement, but don’t expect pricing to return to where it was previously in the foreseeable future.

Let me give you an illustration for my business. An ARM processor we buy to build embedded systems has normally cost us $8 ea. Recently we were quoted $300 ea! So either we stop buying, and have nothing to sell, or we buy and continue production. Inevitably some if not all of this cost has to be passed on. And that’s not even mentioning the increase we’ve seen in international freight.

I wasn't naive enough to buy a scalped vega 56 during the last mining boom, instead I waited for it to go end of life and paid well under MRSP at £235. Gamers have other choices at the moment, a scalped Xbox series X is still cheaper than a 6700XT at the moment

im in pretty much the same situation, but im on a 970 aha. i've got a nice 144hz/1440p monitor and nothing to power up my games to use it :(

Don't overlook a 6800xt, perfectly decent card, and might have longevity over a 3070. They have been up for £700 last few days.

£750 on OCUK now.

EDIT: I meant 6700xt.

Does the 1070 Ti no longer do what you need it to do? Then yeah maybe upgrade. Otherwise might be good to hold on till things calm down.

I replaced a 1070ti with a 3070 (£600). Given the resolution and refresh rate of that monitor, it's probably worth it if you can get a reasonable price for your 1070ti. I sold mine for £276 which I think was fair but not outstanding in the current market. £324 cost to change is not a million miles off what it should've been anyway without this supply crisis.
