A while ago I ran my PC with the side of the case off, and can't remember the numbers but there was quite a significant difference in GPU temp, the fans were much quieter as a result. I ended up putting the side back on because of dust, but it got me thinking, with the way GPU fans work, they pull air in to the heat sink and then it gets blown out in all directions, some of it must end up going back through the fans, so you end up recycling the hot air. I've got two intake and two exhaust case fans but they run quite slow in comparison to the GPU fans so I don't think they really help that much in pulling in cool air and exhausting hot air.
I'm thinking of cutting some holes in the case and using some cold air feed ducting like what you'd use on a car but sealed against the GPU so the fans are only pulling in ambient air from outside of the case. Has anyone else tried this?
