GPU and monitor- so MANY options!! I stuck!

Hey all,

I am at a cross roads in my gaming rig development cycle. And I am stuck as to where to go next.

Primarily I do online racing FPS and lots of photo editing, so have built a rig with that in mind. An i7 6700k, with a AMD 295x2 and a 27" Samsung IPS 1440 panel at 60hz. Beautiful, no doubt.

But, I want MORE!! A bigger panel ultra wide screen, with epic colours so I can do photos, and high fps for gaming! I want smooth, visual and epic, you know the small stuff

And this is where I get stuck - gsynch, freesynch, 1440 on ultra wide, refresh rates of 144 - so many options. Do i go 144 refresh and get a GPU to push 120+ fps at ultra settings on a 1440? is this even possible? Is 75hz a good enough refresh rate, or do you really see the difference at a higher hz? Can any single card power 1440 on ultra wide, or is SLI/ Crossfire the only way to go?

Price is not an issue, so what would be best, either now or in the future.

Really appreciate any guidance people can give.

Here's the thing, only you can answer the question. The difference between 60 hz and 144 hz is a perceptual one and the only one that can say whether it feels worth it to you is you. So how do you do that? I'd order a 144 hz monitor, try it with the games you play, then return it (you won't lose money). Then, if you decide it makes (enough of) a difference, you look at monitors with that spec.

Here's my 2c. First of all, > 60 hz is almost meaningless in anything but CS:GO in my experience.
If money really isn't an issue, then the answers are quite simple still, because even though I don't think > 60 hz is worth it for racing games, hey, if you can afford it & want it - why not? And that's Asus PG348Q + Titan X Pascal (maybe even two of those). The AMD equivalent (but not quite as good), LG 34UC88 + Fury x2 would cost as much as the Asus monitor does alone.

And again, that's not something anyone can answer for you (even though you'll have lots of people chiming in with their day dreams) - your money after all, you know how much it means to you.

Thank you so much for the response and advice. Good ideas!!

I don't want to spend money on nothing, so to speak, has to be value for money. there does seem to be such a division as to whether one set up is better than another, and you are right, they are just opinions. I have none yet, still building them and hoping not to spend a small fortune and then go "darn, should have got xyz" :)

Whichever monitor you choose brace yourself for the glorious lottery of lousy panel build quality and having to send it back.

Buying a monitor thesedays is a fraught, tedious business.

Is it? Oh crumbs :(

Do Overclockers allow viewing in store before taking it home if you pick it up from them?

Honestly if seeing the monitor in person before buying at OCUK is an option for you then grab it with both hands.

The problem with monitors thesedays is that often what you, the customer, considers acceptable levels of backlight bleed on the display panel is wildly at odds with what the manufacturers say is acceptable.

Monitor purchasing. Hmm something to be very afraid of. Me rather be sent on a one man mission to Mars with little hope of success than buy a monitor for pc these days. Shocking that so many monitor's have faults and your frowned upon for even suggesting somethings amiss. New law needs to come into practice. Buy as in pay postage.. (sent to you and if OK then you pay rest). Less fraught this way.

I concur with monitor shopping :(

Not a pleasant experience.

I ended up having to settle for one with some bleed in the bottom right corner.

Sent several back that were just horrendous, especially from Dell.

Monitor shopping is indeed a nightmare and I am currently at a crossroads too.

I love racing games as well so I had a look at this....

I would love an ultrawide too and did look at this.....

I was running freesync but not at the moment. I do miss it a little but can live without it.

With money not being a limiting factor for you, try out whatever you wish.

I would recommend anything over 60hz though. :)

It don't get the big thing with higher frequency monitors. Surely it's just a gimmick and 60hz is high enough?

I certainly haven't been rushing to upgrade my 60hz 1440p 27 inch monitor.

Have you spent enough time with a monitor that's higher than 60hz?

Your 1070 can certainly run higher than 60 fps in most games.

How so if I can ask?
Visual feedback and input responsiveness, for one. It literally helps you drive better.

But it also helps clear up the graphics quite a lot, too. Like any fast-paced shooter where you are constantly moving the camera around, racing games also have the problem of a fast-moving camera, just usually in more linear directions. Play a racing game at 60fps and then drop it down to 30fps capped. The scenery in your view becomes a lot more jerky looking. Same thing with 120fps -> 60fps. The benefits dont all the sudden just 'stop' at 60fps. Any game that plays and looks much better at 60fps than it does at 30fps will similarly play and look better at 120fps+. You can argue there are diminishing returns and that may be true, but I've yet to find many 120/144hz monitor owners who say that the difference isn't still pronounced.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for explaining.

So 144hz is the way to go, but I dont see many 1440 144 hz monitors at 35". and what sort of GPU would power that? I am assuming SLI with 1080?
I dont think there are any. I think 100hz is the best you can get at 3440x1440 35" and that is a Gsync monitor. Pretty sure the equivalent Freesync one is only 75hz. Which is still better than 60hz, though.

In terms of powering 3440x1440 at 100fps+.......well......that's gonna be difficult! If money truly is no object, I'd definitely recommend a new Titan X. Definitely at least a GTX1080. Will depend on the games you're trying to run.

Looks like I might be waiting until next year then :) Maybe then there will be a mix of GPUs to choose and a monitor that meets those specs. I could go 75hz in the meantime, I suppose.

HDR - OMG!! More things. This is turning in the Apple development model - drip feed incremental improvements each and every live long year!

Thanks everyone for the advice, really helped!
