Hey all

My last two builds were from these threads and the budgets I had at those times I always had spot on advice from you clever people.

Current build atm:
i5 [email protected]
8gb ram
2gb 6950
win 8.1
24" screen @ 1920x1080

The PSU is about 3 years old so I am just going to replace it anyway. My CPU I am keeping till at least next year, I will be adding more ram over the next few months so that should be ok as well. I have £550 to play with and really need a PSU and a GPU that will offer me the best bang for buck. Also it has to be the green team this time around, I have had AMD for the past 4 years and I am switching teams this time.

SO all in all £550 PSU and Nivida GPU pretty pls. Unless I can get a major GPU with just £550 then the PSU will wait till next month, current PSU here. Mainly thinking about PSU due to its age.

Many thanks

I think you should also consider AMDs new line up to get good price/performance or possibly the GTX980Ti if it's in that price range. (You are going to have to wait 2 months or so)

If you are in "hurry" grab a 8GB 290X and PSU, GTX970 and PSU or cheapish GTX980 and PSU.

What resolution is your monitor btw ?

These would be my options if purchasing now:

EVGA GeForce GTX 980 ACX 2.0 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £449.99
EVGA SuperNova G1 1000W '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply - £114.95

Hi

Thanks for the help, yeah I am in a hurry really as the upgrade is to play witcher 3 next month at some sort of decent settings. Monitor is only 24" @ 1920x1080. That PSU looks insane, I like that a lot.

The good thing about the 980 GTX, especially the SC is the warranty and being able to change the cooler without voiding it. Plus it may overclock like a beast and stay cool :)

The most highly rated PSU's are the Superflowers, which I have, a 850W

As for CPU, i'm personally biased and would probably go for an i5k or an i7k :p ( Future upgrade )

Memory, 16GB+ is a must now really, if money is an issue you'll be fine with 8GB ( Future upgrade )

The GTX980 should (guestimate) blow through it easily maxed out @ 1080p (par the Uber settings which will probably need a Titan X or 2xGTX980s).

For the PSU anything around the 750W or higher mark should be fine as long as its a quality gold certified or higher one.

My recommendations for the PSU are a Seasonic, Superflower, EVGA or one of the higher tier Corsairs.

Why on earth recommend a 1000w psu for a GTX980? Reviews have shown that SLI 980's only have a total system power consumption of 450-550w. Just for the extra headroom I would recommend a 500-550w unit for a single card and 750w for dual cards. Here are some suggestions:-

Antec Truepower Classic 550w £59.99
This is a high quality gold rated Seasonic built unit with 540w on the 12v rail. Not modular though. It has a 5 year warranty.

EVGA Supernova GS550w £71.95 Another quality gold rated Seasonic built unit with 540w on the 12v rail and fully modular. Overpriced though in my opinion as the 650w version is only a extra fiver. It has a 5 year warranty.

EVGA Supernova G2 750w £89.99 (will go up tomorrow when it comes off this week only offers). High quality gold rated Superflower built unit with 749w on the 12v rail and is based on their Leadex Gold platform but no tacky leds and a whopping 10 year warranty. Fully modular.

Superflower Golden Green HX550w £62.99 High quality gold rated Superflower unit with 546w on the 12v rail. Not modular though. It has a 5 year warranty.

Superflower Golden Green HX750w semi-modular £76.99 (will go up tomorrow when it comes off this week only offers). High quality gold rated Superflower unit with 746w on the 12v rail. Only semi-modular but you will be using the hard wired cables anyway. It has a 5 year warranty.

Having more than enough is always better than having just enough. :)

Agree on the 1000w being slightly OTT.
