gpu backplate worth it

Temperature wise its a mixed bag - on some GPUs it seems to actually hinder cooling - on mine however it is good for around 3C drop in temperature (with normal air cooling in typical room temperatures) which is nice but not that useful.

I do like them from an aesthetic perspective though.

nope....

780, 780ti and titan all used the same back plate.
the backplate only make contact with the 12 ram ic's on the back of the pcb on the titan, on the 780 and 780ti the back plate just sits there looking nice. if anything it may insulate the card putting temps up. but it cant cool what its not touching.

On the GHz edition the backplate makes contact with the heatsinks (and is connected to the housing sitting in front of the heatsinks) which helps to dissipate 2-3C - not sure if its designed to or not but definite makes a reproducible difference in my setup. Not that it makes any real difference as its not enough to make any odds to overclocking or the fan speed.

(Unlike the aftermarket and 780ti ones, etc. it actually wraps around the card rather than just sitting on the back).

Most of the time it doesn't add anything other than looks. Unless you have a heavy card they it may add some support the the PCB stopping it flexing too much. Other than that looks.

im in a state where I want one to make it look nice but not sure if can justify spending money on one . I need to clean out my case and rebuild the system then I'll see . The case inside and is real clean so maybe will.

I have 2 x 290 with waterbocks - the backplates (made specifically for the blocks) are an essential - might not do too much for cutting down temps but I hate to think where the cards might bend to without the . :)

It's personal preference , I like them personally seeing exposed caps traces and components on the back is unsightly compared to a backplate. The cards are way more rigid for less flex, cooling performance is no different I've tested that but cleaning the card of dust is so much easier with a backplate

Yeah, i miss the backplate on my old Powercolor 290, a nice chunk of could gray brushed alloy.

Looks so much more classy than just a naked PCB.
