How do these work? Do they act as a heatspreader for components on the back of the card?

I'm only curious because I've got a EVGA 570 2.5gb that no-one makes a backplate for, but I can't imagine it being too hard to machine one up myself.

If there are components on the back of the card like RAM/Power modules then they indeed act as a heat spreaerd and can shave a few degrees off the card.

But they are mainly for aesthetic reasons, plus some cards dont have anything on the back of the PCB.
