Ok, this might sound a bit dumb... but I've not tinkered with things for quite a while, so grateful for some diagnostic help!

My graphics card (a venerable AMD R9 Fury) seems to have died a death. Not entirely sure why, but screen went all black whilst playing and card has since been completely lifeless (no fans spinning, not recognised anywhere, etc). My best guess is that it died due to heat: I realised after that Trixx had closed itself down and wasn't running (I use this for a custom fan profile) and so the GPU must have got seriously heated and died.

I've bought a "used/working" card off fleabay (an AMD Vega 56). The fans do spin up when installed but the system is similarly not recognising any sign of its presence, neither device manager nor the AMD driver install. Have reseated several times and checked connections, etc.

My question: whilst I think it most likely that the 2nd card is a dud or has been damaged in the post, is it at all possible that I'm missing something? E.g. the PCI slot has been damaged when the first card failed, or something like that?

All else in the system is working faultlessly, as it has done for yonks (i5-3570k @4.4, Gigabyte Z77-UP4, Superflower 1k PSU, bla bla).

Many thanks for any help!

Have you tried either of the cards in the second pci-e slot?

I actually had something similar happen to me on a Gigabyte Z77 a couple of years back, everything just sort of died and I assumed something had given up the ghost.

As it turned out it was the primary PCI-E X16 slot, so @drakulton is definitely worth listening to.

Thank you, kind sirs! Both of you spot on! The new (used) card works perfectly well in the second PCI-E (x8) slot. The old card is confirmed dead in that slot too, so I guess it took out the primary slot with it when it went...

Glad to see my diagnostic instinct wasn't off either! But I wouldn't have bothered trying if not for your pointers.

Presuming the x8 isn't going to make much performance difference as opposed to the x16 slot. Especially since I'm not playing super-fancy modern titles...
