GPU dying, wait a few weeks for new gen?

My rig is getting on a little bit, (i5-3570k, MSI Mpower z77 board and HIS HD 7950) the GPU has started to overheat. It boots at about 60 degree's and sometimes hits 100-104 before cutting out when gaming.

I need a new gpu, but is it worth buying a new 1080 or the new AMD cards released this month? Or would i be better picking up a 970/980 and just making do until i upgrade the whole rig in the next year or so?

If i buy a brand new card, would my cpu be a bottleneck in games?

Have you cleaned the heat sink on your GPU ?

As they get blocked up with dust overtime..

Cleaned the dust a few times and reapplied the thermal. it dropped to 45 on boot but it hasn't maintained.

Fan faulty?

I would try and hold off untill 1070 is released if your after the best value for money.

The fan seems to be running fine, I can't see/find an obvious issue with the card other than it wants to die so i buy a new one.

I was looking at the 1080/1070's but have no idea of my cpu would bottleneck or it would still be fine for a year or so at least (i presume it will, I'm planning a new rig in the next year just not sure when)

Still a very capable CPU so should not be a bottleneck. Is it overclocked?

I did a bit of playing around and used MSI afterburner to reduce both the core clock and memory clock.

It got into the 90's for a short while playing csgo but then settled around 67 degrees. I guess this will be my temp solution until more 1080/1070 cards come to market..

1080 seems to be about 10-15% faster than a overclocked 980ti,

not worth the price tag if you ask me, hold out for the 1070 or get a cheap 980ti from a well known auction site as people are flooding the market with them so they are dropping sub 400
