Occasionally my 480 drops down to 640x480 greyscale windows mode, requiring a driver install. PC randomly crashes, sometimes its fine for weeks another it could crash every 5 minutes, a dozen times so I give up and come back to it next week and then it's fine.

Now when PC is switched on I get a black screen and fan stays at 100%. I tried back panel cmos reset just in case it was corrupted bios settings, didn't solve it.

I'm not a heavy gamer, so could pickup used 5600XT and should be noticeable upgrade. I do have a basic office GPU I could try out to see if the rig is stable with that in.

Monitor is freesync 1440p.

If I got a nvidia gpu would freesync work with my monitor? It's samsung 27" 1440p 144hz freesync

Is that an old GTX 480 ?

Just googled them and they were released in 2010, Thought they were older then that as i used to have a GTX 580ti SLI setup

Going by the last line of the post maybe it an AMD gpu (did AMD also sell a 480 gpu )
Ok googled it and it looks like AMD did release a 480 GPU

yeah. tbh it still coped fine, Forza games at 90fps, War Thunder 75fps, Witcher 35-45fps, all 1440p, at high settings. Doom Eternal about 120fps, at high

I'd try a new battery too.

I'd give it a go, I couldn't say 100% that the GPU is busted from what you described.

Also unless your card/monitor supports it over HDMI, you have to use Gsync via Displayport.

e.g Gsync with my 3060ti wont work with my monitor over HDMI only Displayport, the rx 6600 I had worked with both.

RX480 from AMD, which morphed into the RX580, which itself became the 590 which was an overclocked 580, which was a 480 rebadged :D

Looks like one or more of the memory modules are bad. You could send it of for a fix but the cost will most likely be more then what the card is worth.
