Gpu failure, replacement suggestion?

Hey guys,

Was just playing killing floor earlier, when my computer froze and blue vertical lines appeared down the screen. I had to hard reboot, and it now won't post and the monitor is just searching for a signal. It occassionally posts by itself after a while, but with lots of white vertical lines. It's a Radeon 4870 1gb.

Any suggestions?

If not, looks like it's new graphics cards time!

Anyway, I've been out of the loop for a while and not sure what to choose as my psu is only a corsair vx450. I would like something more powerful than my current gpu but as cheap as I can get within reason.

Processor is an E7400

Update: It will only boot in safe mode, not normal mode.

I'm aware my cpu is a bottleneck, but really can't afford to upgrade right now. What if I found an upgrade to my cpu on MM?

I rarely play killing floor, mainly Ns2, and grid 2 when I get it. Would probably like to play bf3 or 4 and a few other newer games but not on highest settings.

I thought it might have too, out of curiosity, what sort or system would I be able to get without upgrading my psu?

Hmm, I may start gathering resources off of MM and perhaps see if I can conjure up a cheap 2nd hand build, or would you say thats a bit risky? Id be hapy with an i5 and a r7 260x I think.

What if I just got a new gpu, and upgraded to a decent quad core that fits my socket? Would that perform well?

Well, I think Ill get a new gpu, perhaps the R9 270 if I have the funds, and take it from there, as I'll use that gpu anyway if I do decide to upgrade.
