I have checked on the Stanford forum but nobody else appears to have a similar problem. I have just started folding on my 4850, all is great apart from it keeps closing down after it has sent the results, causing me to restart the core again. It says in the log that it is closing down at the users request???.

I got the client running on a 4850 about a week ago and it's been a fire-and-forget thing as it's behaved itself. What driver are you using?
Might be best to make a post in the official forums - especially if no one else seems to have the same problem - as they are beta testing afterall.
