Ok so I'm looking to upgrade my GPU as my 6950 simply isn't cutting it at 1440p

I've narrowed it down to the 7950, 670, and 7970. I'm leaning towards a 7950 as it seems to be at a great price/performance ratio. Which would you recommend and why? Please include benchmarks where possible!

Also, is it worth waiting to see if AMD drops the prices as a result of the 660ti release?

Will you overclock it?

It comes down to this, and how much you want to pay.

The 7950 is the cheapest and the worst performing. I performs OK out the box but you can overclock it quite a long way to bring its performance up. This is your best budget option.

The 670 is the fastest card out of the box overall of the 3 cards and it will perform at approximately 5-10% less than a 680 while the two cards are both overclocked.

The 7970 is a decent card and again if you overclock it then it will more than likely overclock to 680 levels of performance.

The 670 can usually be had for cheaper than a 7970 but if you do overclock it is slight slower.

However you have to take the percentage margins in context of the FPS youll be getting: 5% of 60 FPS (for example) is not a very big difference (3 FPS) so if money is coming into the equation you'd probably be better off saving some money, going for the 'cheap' option of the 7950 and overclock it. You can always add another for crossfire at a later date when the next generation of cards arrive and the price of them plummets further than it already has.

I'd wait a few weeks and see how much further AMD drop prices on the 7950 if price is your main concern... or have a search about for a good deal on a 670 - see what comes up on this week only or whatever

Will definitely attempt to overclock it, looking at the MSI 7950 TFIII as most of the reviews have reported good overclocking results.

Forgot to mention I will probably be buying a crossfire/SLI setup if not straight away then in a few months.

Will be purchasing around the 25th so hopefully price drops or at least news of price drops will have surfaced by then.

Although the HIS IceQ 7950 is a good deal at £240.
