GPU for 4k media streaming and occasional sofa gaming

I have a secondary PC set up in my lounge acting predominantly as a media station. Having upgraded recently to a 4k TV I have found that the currently GPU and cabling aren't up to the job of playing 4k video files to the TV, the files stutter badly and are seriously degraded and unwatchable. My current setup is running from a passive cooled 2gb 750ti,via miniHDMI (6m approx) to the new Samsung 4k TV.

Old setup includes -

CPU - Intel i7-950 Quad Core
6GB DD3 RAM
MOBO - ASUS P6X58D-E - Intel X58 - Socket 1366

Is something here limiting me?

I'm looking to upgrade the GPU to allow me to play these large 4k video files and to allow me to play some more basic games over the TV when I'm in the mood for sofa gaming. I have a primary gaming PC elsewhere in the house, as detailed in my sig, that I use for proper gaming. As this is running an NVidia setup I'm looking for a card in the Nvidia family to fit the bill due to networking symbiosis.

Looking to spend in the region of £200-£300 to get something up to the job, and hopefully future-proofed as the media PC for at least a couple of years.

Any suggestions for a quality HDMI cable too, at around 6m in length to transmit the data nicely.

I'm thinking either a 6gb version of the 1060 such as - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/msi-...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-32k-ms.html

or a SC 970 - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/evga...ddr5-pci-express-graphics-card-gx-263-ea.html

Will I be shooting myself in the foot with the 970 and limiting my budget too much?

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
Bozzler.
