looking into adding a gpu to a itx system to use media portal again, what gpu would i be looking to use for this to take advantage of gpu offloading?
been looking at nvidia 210, 220 and 240 gpus, would these be fine? last i knew nvidia was the main chip for this type of work but do i need nything bigger or would a 210 do everything i need? no games of any kind purely the mp gui and video decoding
 
a 5450, like the one suggested by theforce, is exactly what you need.
If you plan on using the HTPC to play games, getting something bigger is a good idea, but the 5450 is perfectly capable of handling 1080p video.
 
nope no gaming, cpu is only dual core atom so media is its wack, maybe some roms though :D
will have a look at the ati cards, allways thought cuda was better than ati's offering.
 
It depends on what software you are going to use. If you're planning to use XBMC, avoid ati and get nVidia as the drivers and support is much more mature for the linux platform. I have had horrific issues with XBMC and ati cards. No such issues with nvidia at all.
If you're using Windows/MCE then yeah, Ati all the way.
 
cheap quiet and powerfull but my my those drivers. shud be fine for htpc though, games - not so great if you play a few
 
I actually found several lots of video before now which decode fine on Nvidia but not on ATI (artifacting/glitches). Originally I wanted to buy a cheaper 5450 passive for my HTPC but ended up grabbing a GT220 passive at higher cost because of this.

The new 4/5 series cards can bitstream HD audio codecs as well, so don't drop Nvidia completely.
