I want to get a new graphics card that will be able to display at 2560 x 1440. I have been looking at a AMD 7870, or Nvidia 660, I can't see much about the specs other than both will support 1200. I don't really want to have to spend more that £180 on a GPU as I seem to get a new one every 2 years.

I haven't got the money at the moment to get a 1440 monitor but these will soon come down in price and I will get one once they are more affordable and more of choices, hence why I want a GPU that will be capable of handling this in the future.

Cheers
:)

I can't see 1440 monitors dropping much below £300
at under £180 you are also going to be turning down a lot of settings to run a mid range GPU at 1440p... in all honesty you would be better off saving money on the monitor, get a decent 1080p one and use the money saved on a better GPU allowing you to turn everything up to maximum settings

to put things in to perspective, to run things near max at 1440p, you will need 2 GTX670's, which is way beyond your price spec

you would be better off with a £180-200 1080p monitor with a single 670, or 7950

my 660 ti does a reasonable job at that res, however you do need to tone down some of the eye candy that you could get away with at 1080p

Out of interest, if you disable AA (due to the res perhaps not needing it as much), and crank up just about every other setting, how does it generally fare?

its usually fine, and can usually get away with 2xAA. The only game that ive played recently and had to drop it down to 1080p to get the right balance with the visuals was Sleeping dogs.

I was playing Borderlands 2 earlier with everything maxed at 1440p, and it was very smooth, I suppose it just depends on the game.

Thanks for the info. I intend to step up to your res at some point; it's encouraging to hear that a card with a 192 memory interface performs well at that res, and yet doesn't cost that much. I only tend to use FXAA anyway, so AA shouldn't be an issue. :)

It's not jsut gaming that I woul d want it for, one of my many hobbies is photgraphy and these High res monitors tend to show more details, and also have better colour depth, and colour reproduction.

Yes I'd properly game with it but I don't want a 1080p monitor. I use a HP L2465 at work and these are 1200 and these are great, when I sit in front of a 1080 they seem wider than taller, and they seem cheaper as these are mass produced for T.V's.

I could stretch to a 660, but I had my hope on the 7870 as this is more reasonably priced, i and been looking at the specs on the Anandtech GPU comparison site and there isn't much really between these, the 660 edges it most things but I need to consider power usage and cost of the card. I also want to be able to Watercool it it add to my existing rig.

Currently I have a 6870 sapphire vapor x GPU, it's fine for everything I use, BF3, CODMW2, and World of Tanks.

Just really looking for something a little future proof well for then next 2 years anyway.

Put the money towards a new 2560 x 1440 monitor you currant GPU will work fine at 2560 x 1440 for photography and general use :)

You can always drop the resolution / quality settings for the games you play until you can get some money together for a decent GPU :p

what do you think ?:p
