A friend has a Sparke GeForce GTS 450 OC 1024MB GDDR5 that he doesn't need.

Said I could have it for a small amount. Would I be able to play games on normal settings with it?

Cheers

Yeah, I'd skip it tbh. The flat minimum I'd want for games with medium settings / little or no AA would be a 650ti, but ideally I'd aim for a 7850 / 660 (even a 1gb 7850 would probably suffice). However, if buying a second hand card, something like a 5850 / 70 / 6850 / 70 or 460 / 560 would do nicely.

Is that cpu a quad?

It would be "ok" for the dated not so demanding games i.e. Source games etc, but nothing demanding at 1920 res. Overall, it would be more suited for 1680 res than 1920 res, and still would be faster than the 7660D of the AMD Trinity A-10 5800K. Wouldn't considering it unless for under £20.

The 450 gts is comparable to the Radeon 5770 which would represent a huge upgrade over the 8400 gs. I wouldn't pay more then 40 quid for it though bearing in mind 2nd hand 6850's go for about 50 which are a fair bit faster then the 450 gts.

40 quid for that? Im trying to get rid of a 285 for less and having trouble! And i think it hammers both them cards.

What games you planning on playing btw?

It looks like i'm out of touch on 2nd hand prices still its a capable card so long as you don't want to play at max settings all the time.

anything less than x60 is not a true gaming card.

450 / 550 / 650 all sux for gaming, unless you are happy with low settings ;)

460/560/660 are where the good gaming cards begin.
