Hi guys, first post here and first time on a forums of this magnitud.

Right, I have 2 HD Radeon 5850s and was thinking of going for a GTX 680 does any know of a clear comparison between the two? if that makes any sence?

The GTX 680 is a great card but one piece of advice - either wait for the gtx 780 to come out and buy that, or if you can't afford the 780 then wait for a month after gtx 780 is retailed and then you should find that the 680 is cheaper as it has been outdated.

I'm not sure about that "vast" improvement:

Radeon 5xxx series scalling in CF is about 1.8x, so you might calculate how fast would be 2x5850 against single GTX 680. GeForce will be, of course, faster - but depending on games you play it will be faster and smoother, or just smoother (newer games that use shaders techniques most will go much faster). Definately your minFPS will raise up, and more VRAM will make a difference (no stutters when game loads textures to VRAM), as much as you will be able to use higher AA modes.

For me it makes a sense as it's a high time to sell off 5850s :)

moeny really isnt a massive problem, as long as it doesnt run into the £1000s but at the same time i don't want to overhaul the entire pc xD

The 780 isn't out - it has been released but there is often quite a considerable time difference between release and when it is sold in the UK. Also what you might find is that you will see a difference in frame times ( I think it is called ) because crossfire can cause micro stuttering where's the 780 / 680 shouldn't suffer from that.

Does it have to be Nvidia? the 7970 GE is faster than the GTX 680 and cheaper, and has more vRam and the wider 384Bit bus for higher resolutions......

The 780 really is out, retail availability was Thursday(23rd), there are cards available on this very website: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-215-EA&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1341

I'd been waiting for the 780, but think the performance increase (~25%) over the 680 is not worth the additional £200.

Edit: Good advice from Humbug, I bought the 680 rather than the 7970 but now that the AMD drivers have improved, the 7970 is the better buy IMO.
