I'll try keep it brief, bought a evga 980ti hybrid from someone on members market about 4 months back it was an RMA replacement, had all new packaging / sticky tape on it (so new?? maybe...).

Whenever I put the card under load, be it a game or valley bench it will black screen/at times it's more dark green and freeze up the pc. I have to restart it in order to fix.

Things i've tried

- Second power supply with fresh cables and new mains socket in house
- Stress tested cpu / ram ensure it's not them, all fine
- Put in a second gpu my old 7970 ghz and ran it under load check maybe it wasn't the actual socket on the motherboard etc
- Reinstalled windows with fresh install + latest drivers and used DDU.

I'm all out of ideas at this point.... but how does an effectively new card kick the bucket so quickly? been running absolutely fine up until this point. (Or my other theory is a well used cards traded in with step up program repackaged and being sent out as RMA's possibly?)

Never had an issue like this ever.

Edit: Also a quick google seems i'm not alone in their rma's failing......so where would I go from here?

I’d say get in touch with EVGA and Explain to them about what has happened. If it was a brand new RMA replacement chances are they have details on that and I’m sure it would have 3 years warranty even on RMA replacements.

I’ve had a card before that would run fine and as soon as the core hit 70c the system would crash and the screen would also turn green.

- Tried overclocking / underclocking / fiddling with volts / power limit (Evgas oc software) to see if anything made a difference

From what you've described it looks like the VRAM is borked. I know you've said you've tried overclocking and underclocking etc but did that include the vram? Maybe underclock it to a ridiculous level and see if it's stable if it is increase the speed until the screen goes back and report it back to EVGA.
