Trying to install Linux and I keep getting nouveau gpu lockup everytime it goes to desktop. I managed to get it to install by using compatibility mode but now it just does it when i try to to run it from my hard drive.

I'm dual booting it alongside Windows 8 and my graphics card is a GTX 580. I heard that installing the proprietary Nvidia drivers and removing nouveau would fix it but I don't know how to go about doing this. Someone also suggested making it use my integrated graphics to install the drivers.

I have tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu and Arch Linux as well. All had the same problem except for Arch Linux which I just couldn't do.

Any help?

How do I enter those commands when whenever I boot the screen just freezes and then says 'GPU lockup, failed to idle channel1, etc' and goes back to a frozen screen :/

I can't seem to find a way to run the terminal or boot into it.
