My Zotac GeForce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme PLUS Spectra GPU makes an intermittent "whooshing" sound every now and then. It's not all the time, but I haven't pin-pointed exactly when it happens yet. Doesn't sound like a constant fan speed, anyway. It's almost as if it's starting, then stopping, starting, then stopping, etc...

Is this normal?

Lol cat :D.

Take a look at your idle temps. I know from personal use they come on at 50c and I could never adjust this point due to zotacs crappy software. Main reason I sent mine back. Use afterburner instead.

Only thing I can suggest is create a custom fan profile and have it at say 50c come up at 5% increments. This will bring them on steadily rather than a torque startup which is the noise your hearing.

Basically what happens is the card cools below 50c the fans stop and it rapidly heats up again. To say 54-55c. The card now realises what temperature it's at and starts the fans up to compensate, usually higher than what it needs.

If the card has a fan stop feature, its turning on when it reaches 50C at a high speed before ramping gradually back down until it turns off again.

Simply change the fan profile to a minimum 20% and it won't do that.

My 980Ti used to do it. Went from no fans spinning upto 50 degrees then tries to ramp upto 40% fans. So when your temps keep going 47-52 degrees its the fans spinning up then going idle again every so often. A Custom fan curve will fix this. I found 50 degrees was high for idle temps so i had fans start up to 15% from 45degrees then at 50 went to 20% fans and 55 degrees went to 30% fans and then 60 degrees was 40% and 70 degrees was 60% fans.
I had the Zotac Amp Extreme though so bit more beefey so temps did rise too fast but that fan curve stopped the whooshing sound.

If a gpu constantly hits the temp it needs to ramp up the fans, just manually tune ur fancurve.
Had the same issue with gigabyte g1 gaming 980ti

I found that when i had a Zotac Amp extreme 1070, the fans cutting in and out around the temp threshold (as they have 0rpm idle under a certain temp) is a bit more noticeable compared with other brands. Best thing to do is set a custom fan profile and make the fans cut in at a much lower target temp.
