I would try an explanation, but I don't know more than the headlines on mining and I'd probably get bits wrong and confuse more than help.

In short, it's using your gpus to solve cryptographic equations and getting rewarded in cryptocurrency of whatever coin you are mining. The coins have real world value, but this is offset against the extra electricity you are using to mine the coins. It's not particularly profitable right now and you would want at least 8gpus to make any meaningful currency. Hell, I have 7 cards on the go and am getting about 0.01BTC/day, which at a BTC price of $580 is not much at all.
