Hello there!
I was wondering if you guys could help me with a problem regarding a friend. He is using the motherboard ASRock N68C-S, with the GPU ATI Radeon 4870. Three different makes have been tried, club 3d, gainward, and now sapphire. This GPU seems to work on other motherboards however. The main problem is that whilst running a game (e.g. BC2, Arma II etc.) it will slow down from 60fps to an uncomfortable 18fps for no reason. Any ideas?

What is the full system spec?
When you're trying another motherboard, are the rest of the components kept the same?

The parts have been pretty much identical when testing against other motherboards. We guess it may be due to it changing from 3D to 2D mode or something along those lines perhaps? Please clear this up if it is wrong.

The card may be throttling itself due to factors such as overheating.
Check the card temperature with a program such as GPU-Z

He has done this, temperature does not seem to be an affecting factor, due to the temperatures being at different extremities varying from GPU to GPU, and the same disappointing result has always played out. Thankyou for your help though!

I'll ask again - what is the full system spec? Always a chance the PSU is not giving the 4870s enough juice.

I would try a BIOS update on the motherboard, and chipset drivers update.

Sounds more like the CPU and 4870 being not fast enough for those two games. I hope your friend haven't been keeping returning the 4870 back to seller and keep switch to a different brand 4870 because of the card itself being not fast enough for semi-demanding game like BFBC2 and extremely demanding game like Arma II...

Average CPU on stock speed won't be able to deliver decent frame rate for ArmaII, especially if it was only a dual-core CPU not a Quad...and 4870 itself would actually struggle with the more demanding game titles...
