GPU/Monitor Issues - Frames, Audio and fans

Hi guys,

I upgraded to a new GPU and monitor two weeks ago. The GPU is a Gigabyte RTX 2070 Super and the monitor is an Asus VG27AQ. I mainly play Overwatch and wanted to get close to 144 fps on this. But the new set up has led to several (weird) problems.

  1. I'm not getting a consistent 144 fps in game even with settings on low. I don't really expect to get stable 144, but I would like stable 120 or even 110. As it is, I sometimes get 144, but rapidly changing between 70 and 144. The fps counter is constantly flying between those values and more likely to be around 70. What's more, Sometimes I get extremely stuttering frames, much worse than I saw with my old R9 380X. I've enabled G-Sync on Nividia control panel, windows, in-game and on the monitor and disable Nvidia Shadowplay. GPU temps look fine, it doesn't seem to be under any stress. I've updated my Nvidia drivers and removed my AMD ones.
  2. The second issue is audio. I have my new monitor connected with DisplayPort and an older 1080p monitor connected with HDMI. When I boot the system, audio for both monitors works fine, but after a while (I think it might be after one or both of the monitors sleep) audio stops working from both. I can still hear audio through my headphones, and windows detects both outputs and shows volume levels when I play sounds. I'm not sure if this is related to the monitor or the GPU.
  3. The fans on the GPU. When I boot my PC, the fans on the GPU spin up to around 26% of their max, but then keep ramping up higher and coming back down. I've tried resolving this using fan curves in MSI Afterburner, but to no avail. The only workaround I have is to manually set the fan speed to ~37% and then gradually lower that, until its around 26% and then switch to auto, which seems to work.
Any help would be amazing. For reference, my CPU is an i5-6600k on an Asus Z170-A with 16GB of RAM. The CPU is pretty old, but it doesn't seem to be maxing out when I play Overwatch, though it was when I played PUBG and the stuttering made that game unplayable. I've also tried installing the GPU in another slot on the motherboard, but the same results.

Thanks

are you running natively at 2560x1440p?, trying to get high fps at that is fairly difficult, i see you have a 6600k, are you running stock or have you overclocked it?
the 2070 super is a very good card and should have no issues pushing 144fps in most titles with a few settings lowered, max everything and it will drop around the 100-120fps range.

have you just plugged in the card and left it to it;'s own devices?, you can go into nvidia control pannel and under "manage 3d settings" in the box on the right scroll down until you find "power management mode" select "prefer max performance" this will make the card stay at max clocks instead of dropping back, see if overwatch changes if so happy days if not we'll have to have a look into alternatives.

the fan revving on gpus at startup is perfectly normal behavior its the gpus way to see if the fans are working as intended and no way to by pass unless you go custom watercooling, if the card is ramping up and down in windows something isn't right, check the gpu temps if they suddenly spike then the fans will kick in if the gpu gets hot. Try just using one monitor as the second one could be causing issues too

tbh the 6600k you have is getting on but if you overclock it should keep pace with a 2070s

lastly regarding the audio problem i wouldn't really like to say what could causing that, i wouldn't know where to start really

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah, I'm running natively at 2560x1440p. I'm ok with not getting really high frames, I just want consistent frames. And the CPU is EZ mode overclocked, so just motherboard preset OC. The CPU is also not maxing out, which makes me think its not that either.

I've tried the power management change, but it has made no difference so far.

For the fans, I should have clarified a little more. The problem is in windows and continues after startup. So the fans will ramp up and down about once a second or two. The strangest part is that the temps look normal, hovering around 32C. It continues usually until I do the workaround I mentioned above.

Thanks

Have you got an overlay like MSI afterburner on to check the GPU load?

Also, if you have capped fps to refresh rate in the nvidia control panel it may not hit 100% utilisation at points where it would be running over your refresh rate.

sorry for the late reply, was on destiny 2 :)

try disabling vsnc in games but in the nvidia control pannel enable gsync, if overwatch allows set a max frame cap of 144 and see what happens, after you've gamed a bit exit and bring up msi afterburner and see what temps your card go to and pay attention to when the fans span up, look at the same time at your core and the temp and see if there are any spikes, post a screen shot if you can via imgur.

EDIT what power plan are you using in windows, also which driver version have you got installed, and finally did you uninstall your old AMD display driver?

Thanks for these.

So disabling the v-sync in Overwatch has fixed the frames issue. I can now lock frames at 120 and get them consistently. Pushing to 144 is showing a CPU bottleneck though, which is fine. The GPU is handling it fine with temps around mid 50C, but losing frames with the CPU hitting 100%.

The fan issue is unrelated to games I think. In MSI Afterburner the temps look constant, as does the fan speed%, but in the fan RPM graph, I can see consistent speed spikes.

In regards to the fan revving, which driver version have you got installed, and finally did you uninstall your old AMD display driver?, may be worth re-installing display drivers just to clear anything that may make the fans go nuts

Wow quick response! :)

So I uninstalled the AMD driver and then did a fresh install of the latest Nvidia driver and it didn't seem to make a difference.

no problem just to clarify, installing the new driver (which version, look on the home page of NVIDIA control panel) and disabling v-sync, are you still able to hit 120fps, and are the fans still revving?, if so head into msi afterburner as you've said earlier and set a custom fan curve, its annoying but the only real way around it unless you rma the card back for a replacement

The driver version is 445.87.

Yeah, so I think you've fixed the frames issue with disabling v-sync.

The fans still rev until I mess around and manually adjust them after every boot. I've tried setting the custom curve, but the results are the same. It may be something I just have to live with :(

you could always try a older version display driver like 442.74, it could be the latest one has bugs still
