GPU on the way out?

Ok, so starting to think my GPU might be on the way out....

Basically, been playing Anno 2070 earlier and when I go to load into the game itself, my screens switch off and they say 'No VGA detected', the computer then has to be restarted to get it back.

So tried this a couple of times, thinking I'd just turn the graphics settings down... Anyway, couldn't load the game far enough to turn graphics settings down... So thought... hmm, well let's see... So I loaded up Heaven 2.5, and wacked all the settings up to full (AA and Antitropsy(sp?)... Anyway, had exactly the same problem, apart from this time, when I tried to reset my PC using the Reset switch, the Motherboard gave me the error beep for No VGA detected....

About to DL the latest drivers, but I'm hardly out of date..

Card is a 480 GTX, never been tampered with, and never been overclocked.

If people do think it's on the way out, any advice on getting the Warranty sorted? It's still under Warranty, but is an Asus card which I know can be a bit of a pain, but I bought it from OcUK, would it be more useful to go through them? Card was bought on 4th Feb 2011...

Try reseating first (inc power connectors)

Also, new drivers

Just done new drivers. Still an issue. I'll do an uninstall and reinstall them completely clean to try it again, then try reseating.

Also, have just tried Heaven standard settings and have the same issue...

Hmm, just tried reseating it. That also failed... Going to try and go back to the drivers I used when I first built it, and see if that works...

No, I just uninstalled the 50,000 incarnations in the control panel, you think I should...

Link to DL file?

Edit: ran the sweeper reinstalled again. Have more issues, although I could tell the problems were getting continually worse. Can't physically load the PC up any more. It creates the issue before I even get to the log in screen...

Sounds like it's knackered. Unless you can get it to boot up using on-board, if you have it, just to rule out anything else, I'd say next step is to call in the warranty :(.

Yeah, don't have Onboard unfortunately because it's a p67 board.

I've got in touch with another member who might have a PC near me, so I'll try him first, see if I can test it in his system....*sigh* oh well, such is life.

Long shot, try another PCI-E slot to see if the mobo is the problem?

Oddly, I tried this. Whilst it booted none of the drivers or anything seemed to recognise the card... Saying that I haven't tried it since it completely degraded..

Also could be the power supply?

I've got one of them lying around.. Hmm, I'll try hot wiring just the GPU up to a spare one. See if I have any luck...

Can't think of anything else, does sound knackered.

RMA via OcUK so you have someone to pestere after 28 dAYS...

Yeah figured, considering ASUS' reputation for awful return policies...

Corsair HX650W.

I bought it second hand a year ago, think it is about four years old now (total). Might get it RMA'd, but considering I paid about £65 for it, it might not be worth it. Especially as I need a new system up and running ASAP so might just fork out for a new PSU...

It seems the second PSU makes it work... One of the rails or capacitators or something must have gone at some point in the Corsair. It works, but I've worked out now that the computer crashes when the GPU fan speed ramps up if I'm just running off of the HX650.

I'm trying to think of other ways to test the PSU, but frankly I can't even get the PC up and running for very long if I'm just using it with the two PSUs at the moment.

I'll probably order an AX850W tomorrow. Currently the system is running off of the HX, and I have an OCZ ModXStream 500W running the 480. Frankly though, whilst I was happy to use the ModXStream for my Gf's PC when I was building it, I don't really trust it enough on my own hardware... especially a 480 xD.... And I certainly wouldn't trust it enough to run the whole system off it...

850W? You got something big planned? ;)

Could be safe, with room to spare with 750 even going SLI in the future couldn't you? Actually, I'm not sure of the 480 power consumption so I'll leave that comment in for correction if I'm wrong!

Single GPU, under Furmark hit 483W on the AnAndtech Bench test. SLI hits about 850W. I should really be fine with a AX750... but hmm, I dunno, 850 is tempting.. even though I doubt I'd ever need it... Considering the GPU is demolishing a 650W at the moment though... although I think it's just the 650W has failed, yeah, I dunno, I'll have to think about it xD

£20 for AX, although that's the RMA postage cost of the HX back to the Netherlands probably xD

Annoyingly, the PSU is the most worst thing to go... Will require a complete system rebuild. Motherboard out and everything... Although guess this gives me an excuse to re-do cable management (again), also the Comp probably needs a clean, so I guess that'll be a good thing too...

Yeah I feel your pain. I recently went from a Corsair TX 750W which was about 5 years old and starting to get noisy to a XFX 750W Modular and I grossly miscalculated how much time it would take to change it.

I didn't need to take the motherboard out luckily but it still took a while!
