msi x470 gaming plus max board.

this used to run 16x fine for the gpu till i updated bios from agesa 1.0.0.6 to 1.2.0.0. ever since then its been stuck on 8x for the gpu.
iv updated bios to latest one too now agesa 1.2.0.2 and still its same at 8x show in gpuz and in bios itself.
there seem to be no options to change it to 16x.
pics attached.

any ideas?
it is running in correct slot and nothing changed hardware wise just the bios updates.

Are you running an NVME SSD in the slot? On X470 this may slow down the PCI-E lanes.

Looking at the manual, which slot is your GPU in? The manual states: PCI_E6 slot will be unavailable when installing M.2 PCIe SSD in M2_2 slot

Also more info on Slots on page 30: E7B79v3.0.pdf (msi.com)

i do have a nvme in the slot pictured in red in the photo. gpu is in the slot in red in above photo too.
come to think of it im wondering if the pcie 8x thing happened after i got the nvme. i never checked it after.
ryzen 1700 cpu has 20 lanes, so im wondering if 4 is for the nvme, 4 is for the motherboard chipset and then at leaves 12 lanes left. 8 gone to the gpu so 4 remain.

if the cpu has 20 lanes does the chipset using 4 lanes counts in the 20 or is that additional to the 20?

Why not just downgrade the bios again to where you had it running x16 since the latest bios won't be doing much if anything at all for an old CPU like a 1700.

Latest is greatest for bios.
Dunno how much 16x over 8x will be doing for my gtx 780 lol.

I gonna remove the nvme and check bios mobo info and see if it changes

I don't think it will matter much for a card like the 780, you would probably need something like a 2080 to start noticing a dip in performance.

try doing something then watch. it will possibly change to x16. sometimes overclocks can effect this. run gpuz try a game see if it changes to x16. sometimes they drop to save power while not doing much.

Iv tried games etc in windows and its still 8x. The issue is not windows since in my op pic it shows in bios as running at 8x.

You tried reinserting the graphics card, not too long ago i had mine out and didnt quite put it all the way back in took me a few day wondering why i had stuttering in games when i noticed my rx 480 was only running x4.

Yes reinserted twice making sure contacts are clean but still no luck.
Reading on internet this seems to be common on agesa 1.1 onwards and old gfx cards.
No biggie though

ok i just put in a old gpu to test, a nvidia gt210, took a couple of boots to be detected but when it was picked up i got a message saying something about the card not being GOP uefi compatible so bios had to switch to CSM mode.
here is the result:

bios runs it at full 16x. but no longer uefi mode.

so guess its true going beyond agesa 1.0.0.6 changed some stuff and my gtx780 no longer does 16x link.
either way i guess iv put a end to this story, mobo is fine, cpu is fine and gtx780 is fine, just new agesa has bent me over. but as people said above 8x 3.0 is probably way more than enough for a 780.
