Hello everyone, new guy on the forums here and getting right in with a question :D

Recently bought an i7 2600k system which had a lower end gpu in it (5750) which I want to maybe sell and replace with a higher end card.

The main game I want it to be able to handle is Battlefield 3 on ultra settings in 1080p

I was looking at the gtx 580 card due to the fact that it (slightly) beats out the 6970 in most of the benchmarks I have checked online on Bf3 but of course it costs more.

My plan is to get one of these then maybe SLI/Crossfire in future when I need to.

With the new 7000 series out I have noticed a few people are starting to sell off their older cards. So what is the opinion on here between these 2 cards.

I would be hoping to get a gtx 580 for under £300 or a 6970 for even less, what would you guys go for and what would be a good price for these cards?

i personally looked at both and just couldnt justify paying 80-100 quid more for a graphics card over the msi twin frozr III which has the potential to be bios flashed to msi lightning speeds also having had5750's in xfire for a year with little to no problems i would always xfire over sli but then its just down to personal preference. Also the nvidia cards seem to hold value better from what ive seen meaning it will be cheaper to xfire over sli.

With the new 7950 gpu hitting mid-late march may well beat out both these cards with the potential for overclocking the 7xxx series is showing and coming in at a similar price to the 580 it may be a idea to consider xfire 5750, wont run at ultra though but will run great at high with some on ultra just as a tie me over till the 7950 hits, these can be pick up 2nd hand for like 30-40 quid.

Ultimately if you want to buy right now id say this

but thats only because i cant really justify the extra 80 quid for a

the 580 will perform better ofc but your pay a premium for very little framerate gain

Good advice be careful of paying a lot more for only a small performance increase. The msi twin froz iii 6950 has very good cooling and runs at 60c max with the out of the box overclock. Unlock it and overclock to 6970 speeds not much change in temp only a few degrees c.

OP, what motherboard have you got in your system?

If you're thinking of SLI or CrossFire in the future then we'd better make sure it's compatible.

we are not talking about the 6950 though we are talking about the 6970

You may not be but DarkHorizon472 threw the HD 6950 into the discussion and my comment was directed at what he said.

I even quoted him.

Here's what he said in full to save you scrolling up the page:

Thanks for the replies!

Surveyor - I have the Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UDP3-B3 ATX motherboard.

Thanks for the links, it does seem the 6970 seems cheaper, I dont think I would go to a 6950 over a 6970, even though it may OC to get similar performance am I right in thinking I could OC the 6970 too so it would still be more powerful?

I have seen a few people selling gtx 580s for around 300 which is just above the price of the new 6970s which is why I am thinking of these.

TBH at the moment im edging towards the 580 for the slightly higher performance (can these be OC'd too?) and 2 580s in future sounds like a beast haha but if the 6970 Xfire is more or less as good I might consider.

p.s 1 6970 or 580 would run BF3 on ultra 1080p with a i7 2600k OC to 4ghz right?
