GPU or PSU?

So, having issues with a new build, constant crashes, failing to boot etc.

MSI Gaming Pro Max (or B450 A pro max for testing)
AMD 2600X (or 1500X for testing)
16GB (2x8 Corsair )
5x570 8gb Nitro
Seasonic 500W psu

Couldn't get it to run very well at all and had a lot of trouble getting it to post and boot.

After much wailing and gnashing of teeth I bought another chip. Same result
Bought another mobo, same result, with either chip.
In desperation, I pulled the GPU and stuck in one from the 1970s, some old radeon thing I found gathering dust in the back of a very dark cupboard.

However, now it works just fine. Posts, boots, reboots, loads win 10 all just fine, just how you would expect.

So now I'm wondering which is the cause. Gut says GPU, but the nagging doubt is that it has an 8way and a 6way power input on the GPU and I'm using the same lead from my PSU to do both. (8way with a 6way daisy chained off it. I've no other option.)

So, OC folks, anyone had anything similar. The only other thing I could try now is to power the GPU from a completely separate PSU to test that theory but I'm not sure if that would really give me the answer.

What is the old GPU you have tried, perhaps it would be an idea to look at the power draws on both.
If the old one has a lower draw it could be your PSU.
I would myself have used a PSU with a little more grunt.

Its a very old card, doesn't even have an external power input, so powered only by the PCI slot.

Watts calculator says 264W for my system at base so 'should' be plenty of overhead and its a quality PSU.

So the old card gets enough power from the pci slot. That means is draws no more then 75 watts
Your PSU for the 570 is the bare min requirement.
Myself I would change the PSU.

Right then, I hate those threads that report a problem and then never post up if they ever get an answer.

So, with that in mind, I did get an answer to this problem and it was indeed a faulty GPU.

I type this with a shiny new GPU in the rig with no problems thus far. Another RX570 8GB just a different brand. In and running and benched with Heaven, all good. Boots and restarts as it should, so the Sapphire goes back for a refund. I was always sceptical it was the PSU as it would fall over at boot and when just browsing when the GPU is drawing no power to speak of at all. Hence going for a new GPU first.

Anyways up, now I can get back on to the tedious business of getting it how I want. :-)

Just came across an article about power consumption of Graphics Cards which may contain a possible reason for your problems. Anandtech has just completed testing GPU's and measured their power consumption and of the 42 cards tested only one exceeded the manufacturers stated figure - the RX 580! So with the RX 570 being rather closely related it's possible that with a 500W power supply you were sitting right on the power limit and the difference of one manufacturers implementation of a card and anothers may have made the difference of your system crashing or not. Have a look for yourself at the results here...https://www.tomshardware.com/features/graphics-card-power-consumption-tested

I'm convinced it was a faulty GPU as it would fall over at idle presumably when it would be drawing no power to speak of. I could also sometimes run GPU benchmarks with no problems, so if it was solely power related you'd expect it to crash then but it didn't.
