Okay so i have my GPU installed, next thing is maybe to dabble in some over clocking :D

This is what I have in my ati catalyst thingy.

So where do i start?

I understand if it pixels that is too far, which is pretty obvious tbh.

So Should I slide the core up to 810mhz?

How do i know if its stable?

to test for stability use msi kombuster or furmark, and go up in increments of 5 or 10 until it is unstable :p
 
Keep an eye on the temp of the card - yours idel around 50C so it would easily go up to 70-80C when testing under furmark or kombuster.

Also worth saying that if you are running furmark slide the power control setting to 12 or 13 value(i put it all the way to 20), that will help with furmark.
 
I had been playing for nearly 2 hrs in world of tanks.

Never hear the fan at all.


Running furmark now it's been running for nearly 10 mins. Max temp is 69c
 
Do NOT USE FURMARK, its not as good as it once was on 69xxx series cards
best method is running crysis maxed out for 30 minutes at a time trust me your system will freeze if its overclock is to high or display artifacts.

FURMARK wont do that.

also if you do use furmark make sure you max out the powercontrol otherwize furmark will throttle your cards 3d clocks.
still i have found the best method to use is crysis warhead to test for max clocks / stablility.

I've found Unigine to be the best stabilty test for gpu overclocks, when overclocking my 5850 using MsiAfterburner, Furmark would run without error but Unigine would error on the same overclock. It seems Unigine is more sensitive to an unstable clock.

As others have said, run MSI Afterburner. It's the best GPU OC tool, bump up the core clock 10mhz at a time. I'd run kombuster while doing this (it's part of the afterburner package). Kombuster won't guarantee your OC is stable but it will give you an idea. Keep pushing until you see artifacts, then you've got two options: knock the OC back down a bit or bump the voltage up slightly. Just be aware that voltage increases will have the biggest effect on temps.

When you've hit an OC you're happy with, stress test using Unigen's Heaven benchmark. Leave it for a couple of hours and see how you get on.
 
I haven't overclocked a GPU for a long time, quick question: Can you damage one by overclocking or is it safe these days? Aslong as you don't give it a stupid amount of volts or make it overheat?

e : also does it void your warranty if you overclock a GPU?

I use furmark and OCCT gpu test with out any issues for HD6950(unlocked and overclocked). for furmark you have to take the power control up a bit.
If OCCT and Furmark passes with out any issues I can always run 3DMark Vantage or 3DMark11 or Heaven.
 
As said by daveash, bump the clocks up 10mhz at a time until it stops being stable. Then do the same with the memory. Make sure you don't touch the voltage until you know exactly what you are doing.

To test, I use OCCT and heaven. OCCT is good for detecting errors and so is unigine.

Oh, and don't worry about killing your card as you can just return it :)

Finally, do you really nee to OC it? It will just add heat to your case. I suggest you keep stock clocks as on profile, and your overclock in another profile to use later :)
