Is there any point in having a more powerful gpu if I don't game.

Current setting are 1920 x 1080

Windows gives me a score of 3.1

Its a HD 3450

Handles youtube/HD 1080p video fine.

BUT

I have a 4850 installed that gives a 5.8 windows score.

SO is there ANY point.

Does anything run quicker??? OR better?? :o

This is not a troll thread, i just dont game :)

thanks

If the 3450 handles everything you need it to, then id stick with it. The 4850 may run a bit warmer therefore upping case temps.

If you dont game then you want the quietest/coolest/must energy efficient GPU possible that can handle 1080p video.

Well my current GPU the 4850 has a fan. The other is fanless. Me having a htpc for the first time is addicted to making this quiet but also cool.

So I installed the 4850 thinking it has a fan so will cool things around it. But it's just making a noise even with my fan contoller installed and everything is hotter lol.

So a faster GPU has no benefit for me unless I was a gamer? It doesn't make YouTube videos load quicker. Ie buffeting. Or is that 100% down to Internet and decoding doesn't come into it?

Thanks.

Learned a lot this weekend. Woopieee woopieee

If you don't game a better GPU is utterly pointless. If your current one runs 1080p smoothly then it's more than enough. All a faster card will do is draw more power and make more noise and heat.

I agree with everyone else as well, no point fixing something that ain't broken.

If it worked for you before then it will be fine now.

I used the HD4350[fanless], which i believe is very similiar to the HD 3450. I used dual monitors and could play over 3 1080p movies at once. As long as you dont game on the video card, it will powerfull enough for any movie you want to watch.

Video decoding on the HD3450 is enough for 1080p. Unless your video encoding with gpu hardware acceleration enabled[encoding with hardware acceleration usually decreases quality anyway], you only require the HD3450. The gpu doesnt affect any other aspects of the computer in terms of speed.

Its not worth the noise, heat or power of the 4850 if you dont use it for gaming. Its just costing you money for the power of running it.
