GPU positioning

So i just got a MSI Gaming X 1080ti and put the old MSI Gaming 970 in the box. I have now decided i will put the 970 in also so i can mine on that while gaming. Not expecting to make much money, if any but more of a hobby thing. The problem i'm having is know how to position them on the mobo to try and keep the system as cool as possible. I have a NZXT440(runs relatively hot i believe?), MSI Gaming M5 Z170 board and a Kraken X61 cooler. The mobo has 3 slots with a gap between the middle one and the bottom one but is the bottom one slower? Obviously i want the 1080ti to run at max speed so this requires it to be in one of the top 2 slots? If i have the 1080 at the top and the 970 at the bottom then won't the heat from the 970 travel upwards and affect the 1080? However if i have the 1080 in the middle slow and the 970 in the top slow then being so close will limit cooling? Does anyone have a suggestion as to how i position them?

Many thanks

you will want your GPU that will be maxing out more often or the one getting the hottest as low in the case as possible as the heat will rise. Are you able to mount a fan in the bottom of your case pushing air up? And maybe leave space between the GPU's if you have space.
