Hi OC - was wondering if anyone could help or offer some advice as I'm pretty stuck.

I sold my old graphics card, a 1060 Strix, on eBay recently. The card was in full working order and I never experienced any problems. It was sent securely in its original box with new packaging including airtight bag and bubblewrap.
After 5 days of receiving the item, the buyer requested a refund/return, stating the following;

Reason for return

Doesn't work or is defective

Hey there, I ve been having a ton of problems with this strix card. I ve done a ton of testing and it only seems to work under certain conditions. It works with my i7-z370 combo, it works in a pci-e x4 slot and it works with a ryzen 2400g with in-built graphics. Any other circumstances and I get no display at all. I ve tested 4 boards, 4 cpus, 2 ram kits, 3 psus. My hunch is that it works fine with an igpu in the build but I can t use it for it s intended purpose and I d like to return it.

At first I thought the guy was just trying his luck, but after exchanging further messages I think he is legit and generally having problems. Further message from him;

I was inclined to believe it was the build (r5-b350 combo) that had the problem to begin with. The last thing you want is the gpu to be the problem When i seen there was no display in the first place i ran through all the common troubleshooting steps and then decided to check it in my main rig (i7-z370 combo). It displayed fine in that build so i tried a 1050ti and a 1080ti in the r5 build to see if it was the graphics port that was faulty and they both worked so it wasnt the motherboard. I ordered and tried another psu to no avail and at that point i tried with different cpus, different motherboards different ram sets, all of the other parts working with each other apart from the 1060. BUT i knew it was working in my i7 build so it’s messing with my head. It also worked with a ryzen apu so like i say it would appear it works in tandem with a cpu with on board graphics since the i7 also has it’s own igpu. Would you mind if i ask what your pc specs were when using this card? I believe you when you tell me it was working when you sent it out (and it works under certain conditions for me too) but i’m thinking perhaps your pc specs fell under the conditions needed for it to work just out of luck. Also it displayed on a pcie 2.0 x4 expansion slot on a b350 board but not the pci-e 3.0 x16 graphics slot which makes it usable but not at full performance which i could live with personally but since i’m selling this build it has to be 100%.

For reference, this is my PC specs when I was running it and I had zero problems;

i5 6500 3.2ghz
Asus Prime B250Plus ATX
Corsair CXN 650w
Kingston Fury Ddr4 2400mhz 4gb X 2

I had the GPU connected via DP.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what the problem is, as I really don't think its the card and more of a Software/Settings issue he has. I'm not the most technical minded so its starting to go over my head now, so if anyone has experienced this before or may have a solution and can help that would be great!

Thanks in advance!

he probably plugged his monitor into the mobo's dp/hdmi port rather than the GPU's ports.
or didn't configure the bios to output from the dedicated GPU
or didn't plug in the 6/8 pin connectors to the GPU (surprising how many people forget these)

error is probably between keyboard and chair, rather than the GPU, assuming, of course, the GPU was not damaged during transit, and installed correctly

Maybe the new owner needs a bios update? Some mobos needs a bios update to fully support certain cards or for the. To work properly.

Did you make a note of all the serial numbers etc to make sure the card you are getting back is the card you sent?

Might be worth making it clear that once you get the card back and confirmed the serial numbers match what you sent you will refund him just in case he is trying to scam you

This was the latest reply where he mentions updated his bios and vbios and the most recent 1060 drivers;

OK given your specs I believe that would confirm the on-board graphics theory. Since your i5 has an igpu, you wouldn't notice any fault in the graphics card prior to sending it out since it was under the conditions needed for it to work perfectly. It appears to be an unfortunate mishap, no blame on anyone. Of course there is a possibility, albeit a slight one, that the systems I've tested in were faulty in some way but due to the fact I tried so many different setups, all confirmed to be working with the 2 other gpus I had on hand, I can only point to the 1060 card being the issue. I've tried installing the most recent 1060 drivers, I updated my bios and vbios and even updated the 1060 cards firmware and the problem persists

Unfortunately I did not (stupidly) make a note of the serial numbers and only really thought about this till after I had sent.
He has asked for me to reimburse £50 of the price as the resale value is significantly reduced since it only works on the intel build. I believe he is building a rig to sell on.

Can they actually get a refund as they have admitted that the GPU does work, just not on the Ryzen build it was intended for?

I need to contact ebay as this is what I'm thinking, but you may be able to request a refund regardless if you are in within a certain number of days of purchase?

you're getting conned here. oh well.

lolwut. i'm pretty sure one would notice the difference in gpu performance between a 1060 and an intel integrated gpu.

he's having you on.

(stupidly)
indeed. depends on how lucky you think you're gonna be, as to what you want to do.
either (1) give the £50 partial refund, or (2) take the chance you might get a faulty card (which may or may not be yours) returned.
either way, without being able to prove the original card with a serial number, you might as well get the lube out ready for ebay and the buyer.

Lol nicely put. I've gone back to the guy and called him out really, I'm not issuing a refund and will take it up with eBay. I've done some looking about and can't find anything similar in terms of problems. The fact that he is confirming the card has worked on various occassions in set up's and not others says to me it is not the GPU that is faulty.
