GPU Problem?

Hey guys,

I've recently been having some problems when closing games, weirdly when I close a game to go back to the desktop my computer freezes and no matter what I can't do anything so I have to force shutdown my PC. Everything seemed perfect before I had to do a clean reinstall of windows and obviously having to install all drivers.
Anyway, I have just uninstalled my GPU driver and reinstalled it however, the problem still persists. But, if i play a game windowed everything is fine but it is soon as I switch to full screen and it only crashes if I try to leave to go back to the desktop.
On another note, after reinstall of windows I began to use Comodo Firewall and Avast Antivirus, just wondering if these programs interfere with this problem.

Hope someone can help, all I can think of is that my GPU is ready to fail.

My PC specifications:
MSI HD 6850 Cyclone Power Edition 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor
Corsair XMS3 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
ASRock Z6Extreme4 Gen3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Windows 7 64 bit.

UPDATE: I just updated my gpu driver after uninstalling the out-dated one and during installation of new driver, a BSOD appeared when installing the driver. By the sounds of it, my GPU may be on its way out.

Regards
Stefan

One gpu or two?

Best to get a signiture sorted so we all know what you're running.

Windowed mode would only use one card...but don't know what you have :)

I have one GPU.

MSI HD 6850 Cyclone Power Edition 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor

Sorry, thought it wouldnt have been an issue but I will defo put it as my signature.

Dont write it off just yet.

Checked the ram using memtest?

No overclock on cpu i guess from specs?

4 sticks of ram may need a wee tweak in bios due to extra strain on mb running it....not familiar with that chipset though as i am a bit outdated now mb wise :(

Can you borrow a card from some one or lend them yours to test with?

No I havent done memtest, how do you do that? Im sure you download it from internet?

My RAM is about 1year and half old. Im not sure how to tweak the BIOS, sure there are youtube tutorials ha.

My whole rig is to be honest. I've had no problems like this before, just weird how it all happened after a fresh reinstall, maybe something didnt install properly. Only thing is reinstalling my motherboard drivers. Or try and deleting Comodo Firewall.

And no, no overclock. I have unplugged my GPU and im using my intel graphics and will run the game and see what happens. Im afraid not, so this is my only option at the moment.

Thank you.
I have a new update, I used my intel graphics and opened the game. When I quit the game to go back to the desktop it crashed again :(.

This isnt great. I will run that memtest now. I will try uninstalling Comodo firewall after.

Get the installer for usb pen...get blank pen and install then boot from it.

Good sign though that its not your gpu thats the problem :)

I found the source to my problem and its so pathetic, to the point I was very close by reinstalling windows. Well my instincts was correct all along and Comodo Firewall was the program which was causing these crashes and by switching it "game mode" Im able to go fullscreen again.

Therefore, Do I keep it or not and just stick with the original windows firewall which I always have done and never had problems.

Cant beat kaspersky as an antivirus :)
Can be found cheap at auction...ie £15 for 53 user disk

But i always turn off during gaming session...old habit.

Glad you got to the bottom of it :)

need to reduce sig to three lines though mate or mods will get onto you :)

I haven't brought security for a while now, always stuck with microsoft essentials, malwarebytes and thats it. But now ive also installed Avast and superantispyware and everything seems fine..before I just used the first two and used the standalone windows firewall.

Feel like just going back to the windows firewall.
Yeah same here, thanks for your help!

And thanks again, keep changing it :L.
