Hi guys,

So, I'm making a new build - one which I intend to last for 3 or 4 years.

On the topic of graphics cards.... I'm not a huge gamer, so that's not my main concern even though I wouldn't mind playing a game or two here and there.

What interests me is the idea of processing data on the GPU, I work with CAD and being able to render on the GPU would be insane - how far off is this?

Basically, I'm wondering - is the 8800 GTS capable of running code on it? Or is it limited only to drawing graphics. How close is this next step of development - am I being optimistic with thinking about graphics card power for other purposes than realtime graphics?

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for the replies.

Is there some special technology that a card needs to have to be able to do this? Or can pretty much any card be used in this manner? Basically I don't want to get the card, then a program which utilitizes them, to see an error saying "get a card with 'x technology' to use this function"...

Ah, thanks, that was what I needed to know.

C code can be run on the card I want to get, using an architecture that will remain compatible (for a while at least).

Thanks again!
