i've got a 9800XT at the min, gonna put an aquaxtreme mp-1 gpu block on it. would i be better off gettin some ram sinks for it too or leave them bare??

i ask because i know the ram gets a bit toasty on these

cheers

Does the current/stock cooler cover the ram?
If so you should probably get some ram sinks, and definately get some if your overclocking it.

I have a similar question. So this saves starting a new thread. I'm thinking about fitting a Zalman VF900 or a Accelero X1 on my OcUK 7800GT. Does the stock cooler cover the RAM chips (never really looked before i fitted it :p ) If i do, how are the Zalman ZM-RHS1 heatsinks? Is there anything better?

I have a 7900gt and the ramsinks wasnt Covered. Id invest in a Set as they are cheap to be sure. they do help. :)

7800gt stock cooler did cover the ram. pic
So if you use the zalman, fit the ramsinks that come with it, and i think the accelero covers them anyway.

If it had been a 7900gt you wouldn't need them.

yeah was thinkin as much, i remember how hot my last 9800XT got (72 idle in this weather with stock cooler on LOL) so i guess ram sinks would be beneficial

Ram usually runs fast on a graphics card and its often the first thing to fail, certainly one of the more common ways for a graphics card to die.

Sadly there are no temperature probes on the ram so if your gpu is 72 idle your ram could be anything.

yeah, 9800XT's always run hot, even on full load the temp doesnt go much above 75.

the last one i had i put an arctic cooler on and some copper bga ram sinks, though these were crappy and kept droppin off, till one day it just black screened while i was in the middle of readin a post on here, wasnt even loaded so i guess possible ram problem

think ill get some of the zalman ones as i had some of these on a 9800pro at one time and they seemed to work nice, also didnt drop off :)

You don't need GPU ram sinks. Stock coolers barely touch them half the time anyway.

Totally true, well with modern GDDR3 anyway. Not sure about older ram :o

9800Xt doesnt have gddr3 mem, i know that gddr3 doesnt need ram sinks, im runnin my x800pro vivo without any on the back and its fine :)

I ran my old 9800 pro (r360) with no ram sinks with no problems:

hmm, may save my self some money then and leave them off :)

i do plan on overclockin and volt modding it though, hopefully this wont be a problem
