Hey all, just a quick question. A friend of mine is having some poor graphic results whilst gaming(poor fps and jerky movement). Although its not a great card, a 9600gso 768meg, I think it should be better than it is. He is using the latest drivers, and res of 1680x1050.
The thing is I had a quick look inside and hes running it on a single molex chain with 2molex connected to an adapter for the 6pin. Nvidia say max power consumption is 105w.

Can a single molex chain supply that power?
If not, would it be better spread over 2 different molex chains?

Thanks in advance.

you cant play games at that res with that card. unless its DOOM or QUAKE lol turn the res to 800 x 600 it mite run a bit better

if it was a power problem it would either no turn on or it would tell you there is not enough power with a error code when it got into windows.

look at this card http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18245629

i would say you need to be at at least 50ish to play at those res's unless you turn all the detail down

He used to play wow and he was fine with everything except 25man raids. Hes now on rift and he struggles with the invasions groups. PSU is an artic 600w I think,(think thats a rebranded jeantec not sure tho).

75W of the 105W requirement comes through the motherboard anyway. So can the Molex chain provide 30w, yes easily.

I'd imagine you'd need to turn down settings for the games to run smoothly on such a low powered card.

OK so if the gpu is just not cutting it anymore what can he replace it with? sub £100 if possible?
iirc hes got
Gigabyte GA-G31M
[email protected]
4gig Corsair DDR2 XMS2
Windows XP 32bit, so 3.2gig usable atm.

I had a quick look around and the 5670's are pretty cheap(dx11 and gddr5).

Or GT 440 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-152-OK&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1402

Personally I dont think it worth spending anymore then that on 1, but I know very little. As always any help is welcome, and thanks.

For a little bit extra get a gtx 460. In my second rig Ive gone from a 5770 to a gtx 460and there blot better. But you could go on and on like that. Also i have a 8400 and you can clock that very easy. Mine is at 4.1 and could go higher if i could be bothered

Im sure i seen the 5770 on here for 89 quid was a xfx one have a look

there you go.

Find a cooler for the cpu and you got a good system

look at tilt chart i linked you to and work out best price for power

5770 is the best coice for £100 or less. Ofc. if you spend a bit more you could get a gtx 460 for 120, or a 5850 for 135 etc. etc.
but a 5770 should be fine.

5670 is a decent card for the price. My brother has one and it games fine for him (at 1440x900). 5770 is only £25 more and is a lot better though.

What games does he play with the card? I had the same one (8800GS which the 9600GSO is a rebrand of I believe) and was okay up to around 1600x900 which isn't far of his resolution. Source games were okay and even GTA IV played well.

Also what are the other specs of his system?

the 8800gt was the same-ish as the 9800gt, i think the 8800gs would have been a 9800gs. His 9600gso would be more like an 8600gs

Nope there wasn't a 9800GS released :p

...essentially, a renamed GeForce 8800 GS

The GSO is a reflashed 8800GS to shift unsold stock. Same G92b chip, same RAM size, same RAM bandwidth, same clock speed, same RAM speed etc.

Anyway on my PC (Q6600, 4GB RAM) the 8800GS played most games pretty well except when I pushed the resolution up to 1920x1080 because the 192-bit memory bus. I should also mention my card is/was only 384MB too!

Not that I'd swear to on it but I have a feeling that most if not all 8800GS/9600GSO cards had 1GHz RAM which was downclocked to 700MHz. My XFX 8800GS clocked up to 1GHz and my brother had a PALiT 8800GS and the RAM clocked well too. Might be worth trying to squeeze a little extra performance out.
