GPU running hot. Virus/malware/troj?

Since I did the last batch of windows updates on the May 1st, around this time of night, 11pm my GPU starts running insanely hot, and my PC is just idle with Chrome open and Mumble and I'm not actively using my PC I'm turned around playing Dragons Dogma.

Just 1 night while playing Dragons Dogma I was hearing a high speed fan noise, I have a 470 GTX so I am tuned into hearing the fan on it, so I checked the temp and it was at 90c, with the PC idle remember. Yesterday night while playing The Showdown Effect at this time, 11:30'ish PM I alt tabbed to check the temp and it was 105c, without doing anything about it, in the early hours of the morning like 1-2am I tabbed to check again and it was running at 80c which is where I would expect it to be.

About 30mins ago I was hearing the noise again, checked my GPU and 90c again. So I rebooted and and the temp bounced between 70-80 and then settled to 60c which is where I expect it to be.

I have no idea what's causing this, I have run Spybot and Avast and they both came up clean, I've checked task manager and didn't notice anything that shouldn't be there.

Might be a BitCoin virus. I have heard of people tele-mining using your GPU to earn their BitCoins. I unfortunately do not know how to stop them but I'm sure someone else will chime in...

No there is nothing dodgy looking in my process list.

I just refreshed this page then checked and it was back at 90. Now as I am ready to post it's dropping back down.

Download and run gpu-z, click the sensors page and observe your gpu load at IDLE should be about 0%, if gpu load is high then you most probably got some kind of a bitcoin virus/troj/code running on your gpu.

Yeah it does sound a bit like a bitcoin mining program. Saw an article about that in 'New Scientist' magazine recently.

That or a lot of dust XD Those temps look insanely high for an idle card, but the 470 always did run kinda hot? My 460 idles at like <30°C XD

try using process explorer, the newer versions allow you to view per process gpu usage, view->select columns->process gpu tab->tick all the boxes.

Good suggestion, I'll monitor my temps through the day, especially late night and see what's happening.

ShakeNBake, yeah my card has always run this hot even at idle. The fan does run at 40% though. If I run at 100% then it idle's at 35-40c depending on room temp.

Seems to all be coming together now. I started noticing this at the start of May, just after I started playing Dragons Dogma(on PS3). I started using Dragons Dogma wikia and leaving the page open all the time while playing, for some reason that website is causing the issue, and when I started playing The Showdown Effect the other day it was right after DD so I still had the wiki open and on top, so that's why I had a 105c temp and 80c at other times when I didn't have the page open. I can recreate this every time.

I don't know anything about website operations so don't know what this website is doing or anything that might be running on it behind the scenes.

Here's the link if anyone does - http://dragonsdogma.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon's_Dogma_Wiki
