Hi all, got a hopefully minor issue with my case: the two holes to fasten down the GPU are stripped. Not so badly that the screws just full out, but they don't provide a good amount of clamping force and the GPU can slide around. It's a long card, too, and I don't like the way it can flop around even it's screwed down properly, and now it's even worse!

Can anyone recommend a way to secure it nice and safely? I don't want to just glue the things, obviously, and I don't have the wherewithal to, for example, cut new threads in a larger size.

Longer screws/bolts and stick a nut on the other side?

You could just use a couple of suitably sized self tapping screws.

It'll depend how visible it'll be and how pretty you want it.
 
Find the M-size for the holes, and increase it by one.

I think they're M3's, so get two M4 screws.

should be under £2 from an auction site.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm sure one will work (short of getting a new case - it's not that old already, just got a bit manhandled on the way to a LAN...)

I can get most types of screws from a hardware shop in town (I presume these are actually #6-32s rather than M3s), but I've never tried forcing in one size up - if this works it's probably the best solution in terms of neatness, but my gut feeling is that, since there is *some* thread left, they will just never go in (without a hammer ;) ) On the other hand, a #8 is only .6mm wider than a #6 so maybe it'd go in. If anyone has any experience that'd be welcome, otherwise I'll just go and buy some. I imagine I'll spend a lot less than £2 anyway, it's more about not having to buy everything to save a trip and filling my house up with screws I won't ever use :D
 
Perhaps a nylon self tapping screw as would mould the screw's helix around the hole rather than enlarging the hole?

But, M4 solution has worked for me in the past. Dedicated self tapping too.

Use a drill and a hand tap to rethread the hole properly. It's a very basic operation and the bit, kit and lube are cheap and very handy to have around.
 
if the screws are stripped and that is the problem just get some more exactly the same screws? im forever stripping screws on my case fortunately it came with a box full of spares and i also got a box of spares on the case i had before it so ive got plenty.
 
Woah, a lot more people replied and it took quite a while for me to get around to putting the new screws in, but I just did and it seems to be a success. My local hardware shop doesn't have a vast array of machine screws. I bought some next-size-up screws (can't now remember exactly what size they are) and also some wood screws of a size which looked likely. It was very easy to just force the wood screws in - not much force required really. I haven't tried the machine screws and they look less likely to work (finer thread pitch and no self-tapping point) so I won't bother with them. It cost me 10p for all of them, heh!
