Has anyone out there experienced this?

When ever I get a 353 credit wu for my Zotac 8800GT it makes a horible hi pitched squeaking noise - the only thing I can compare it to is a broken hard drive, hi pitched and intermittent like a hard drive writing data It doesn't do it with other work units

I also have a Asus 8800GT but this doesn't make the squeaking noise

Any ideas :confused::confused:

if its the caps then a lot of cards do it. paricularly the GTX series. my pitch varies dependant on what frequency i have clocked the card at.

nothing to worry out, just a bit annoying but you get used to it. :)

I have not had an nvidia card that does not do this! I dont think its a real cause for concern - the cards i have had have folded almost all the time they have been on and all have been fine/showed no signs of having any problems. Its something i noticed when running 3D mark as well - between the tests (when the framerate is very high), my GTX makes a very loud squeal!

I have also noticed that it still makes this noise when I decrease the usage of the gpu down to 10%

Are there any other cards (other than my Asus 8800gt) that don't squeek?

I think its quite down to luck to be honest. Some queak more than others (my GX2 and GTX were both more squeaky than my 8800GT), some might not squeak at all. I'm pretty sure its to do with the capacitors in the power regulation circuit (so even loading the gpu at 10%, you will still be in 3d mode and using quite a bit of power). It is quite annoying i agree, but aside from buying another card to try, im not really sure you will solve the problem. I have no idea if the ATI cards squeak as much? I would have thought so, but maybe look for ATI squeal online? (or, the far cheaper option, stick on a little quiet music!)

Its down to poor PCB layouts and component quality that produces resonance that you can hear.

iirc - Ati cards tend to suffer from this less as they adressed the pcb layout a couple of years back after a range of cards (dont remember which) had bad squealing. Nvidia on the other hand whilst acknowledging the issue, havent as of yet addressed it.

It isn't something you can stop (tho i did read coating your pcb in nail varnish helps - not that i'd advise this!!!)

tends to occur on random cards aswell, my three 8800gtx's have consecutive serial numbers, yet only two of them squeal under load folding.

My 9800 GTX+ does it. It's annoying but it's just the sound of electricity :D

I wonder wether everybody can hear it?

Everyones ears are subjected to varying degrees of abuse during their lifetime and heavily abused ears or older ears lose the ability to hear higher frequencies as the receptors die off. So maybe it's possible that some lucky soles cant hear their GPU squealing? :p

My 8800GT doesn't squeak when folding luckily, but my daughter's old 7600GT plays the National Anthem when she runs Sims2, I swear!!

Mine doesn't squeal very much and I'm running with fanless watercooling, it's quieter than my HDD so I won't be trying it :)
