Hi

Graphics card suggestions please!

Main uses:
Standard Office / Browsing
Photoshop CS2 (will possibly upgrade to CS4 with 64 bit Vista)
Some video
Some gaming by 10yo son (but this is not to cause significant change to spec!)

Cost:
Looking for VFM rather than cheapest - but don't need anything 'huge'.

Current proposal is in the spec below:

Thanks all

There is a gigabyte HD3850 512mb in the sale section for £45ish at the moment. I would personally chose that over the HD4670 given the price difference.

However I would also look more towards the 9600GT which costs only a little bit more than the HD4670 but offers greater performance in most games.

or wait for the 4830 release

Do 'we' know when this is coming out?

Will it be / is it expected to be better than the 4670 / 8800 / 9600 etc?

Do 'we' know what the price is likely to be?

Are the prices likely to be high for a few weeks before supplies become widely available?

Thanks all.

October 21st last I heard.

And it should not be far behind the 4850....which destroys the 9600 and 8800GT

Will have 640 stream processors and 512mb on 256bit mem interface

The 4830 looks like a pretty sweet little card, if it's cheap. Especially if it clocks well, considering its stock speed is 575MHz, it should be good for a decent boost over stock, and if AMD sticks to their guns with pricing their cards extremely competitively, clocking the things might bring a pretty decent price to performance ratio.

October 21st last I heard.

After a bit of digging - seems expected date may now be 23 October.

But, will the first ones be higher priced, until there are a few more out and available...?

I still quite like the 4670 - the one I've currently spec'd is the HIS Turbo version - which includes an Arctic Cooling fan and is pre-overclocked.

8800GT for £76 on OCUK I would say is the best option budget wise but if you'd want to step that up a little then a 4850 would be the best choice although just over fifty pounds dearer.

OK - so this is now the last major item I need to decide on and the most difficult and controversial to choose!

As previously mentioned:

Little or no gaming (although my 10yo will do a bit)
Photoshop
Some video editing

So I don't need the latest-greatest for current use. VFM, future proof, reliable etc more important. But does future proof mean getting something better than I need now - or is the 4670 future proof enough?

I've almost decided on the HIS 4670 IceQ Turbo - but could still be persuaded otherwise.

Given my proposed use, is it really worth me spending more than £61 on a GPU?

The main choices seem to be as set out below - what do you think I should go for? For ease of reference, I've numbered them (see Quantity ;) ).

The other option is to wait for the 4830 - but that will probably be £80+ and I'm not sure I need to spend the extra.

If you are going for the 3850, dont go for that one, there is a Gigabyte 3850 512 in the sale for £47 (£44 with the 666 offer) I've just ordered one so i think there will be one left. Just wanted to point that out if you do decide to go for that card.

Rule that 8600GT out immediately, its nowhere near the other cards. Any of them will do perfectly, its just how much you want to spend. I know that doesnt help much sorry.
