I just looked in on my son to see how he's getting on with his new PC and I decided to run the Firestorm app that came with the Zotac 1070 card.
The app is running on auto and showed the GPU was at 49 degrees and the fan was at 0%. Is that normal?

If its on auto yes thats normal, fans starts working on certain temperatures to keep the card quite. You can use superposition to benchmark your graphic card and also see its load temperatures. If its too high ( over 80c ) during load then you can modify fan curves yourself to get temperatures lower or look for alternative cooling methods.
