GPU that only draws power from slot?

Hi folks,

I have a friend who recently bought a pre-built and was surprised to find the supplied PSU has no PCI-E cables. Are there any GPUs from the last few generations which can draw their power entirely from the PCI-E slot itself and if so could you recommend any? It will only be used for light-medium gaming so does not need to be a powerhouse, but something at the level or above of a RX590 would be ideal.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

If the psu has no pci-e cables what make and model is it? It could be that it's a no name garbage make and I would be replacing that asap. Or is it a Dell/HP or similar office type build?

I'm only guessing but it maybe more than just the lack of PCI-E cables as you can get Molex/SATA to PCI-E 6/8 pin converters.

Also hobbled in most older PCs due to only having 4x physical PCI-E lanes

Forgot about that, but it only consumes around 50W so should be a bit easier to cool in a smaller case:

The GTX1650 does look quicker on a PCI-E 3.0 system though and might be easier to get cheaper secondhand:

But maybe the OP needs to tell us what the system is and what the PSU is rated at. If the case can take a bigger PSU and graphics card,it might be worth doing that instead.

I have already suggested changing the PSU because it is indeed a budget unit but the person in question does not feel confident doing it and I live too far away to do it for them.

I was not aware there were SATA/Molex to PCI-E convertors so I'll have a look into that thanks. There are a couple of spares hanging off from the pictures I have seen.

FYI: replacing the PSU with a standard model is often not possible in proprietary systems, they may not have standard power connectors for the motherboard.

SATA/Molex to PCI-E adapters also used to have a poor reputation in the mining days for burning up and were not recommended. I'd be comfortable with a low draw 6-pin card (e.g. GTX 1060 or RX 560), but anything more demanding than that, I wouldn't want to be using them.
