hi looking for a bit more gpu bite.
Current spec
I5 4690k
evga 960 4gb ssc
8 gb ram
2x samsung evo 850 ssd
psu evga 750 gq

im looking at either a gtx 970 or r9 390 but cant make my mind up. I play at 1080p on a 60hz monitor and wanting to max out any game and future proof myself. The cards i have been looking at are

if the r9 is the way to go would my psu handle it with an overclock

thanks

would you go for the r9 390 or gtx 970 ?

R9 390 of course. Much faster card, with better DX12 support, and it will not run out of VRAM on games.
However if you are not in hurry wait until summer when AMD Polaris are due to come out.

I would personally go for the 970, this one - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/evga...ress-graphics-card-04g-p4-3978-gx-270-ea.html

I have had ATI and Nvidia GPUs in the past and the Nvidia ones are just better - more stable and better drivers. EVGA offers fantastic customer service and warranty options and are very well built. 4gb of ram will easily be enough at 1080p, the 970 will use less power and overclock better than the 390. 8gb vram is just marketing crap on the 390, even the 980 Ti cards 'only' have 6gb. 4k gaming yes, 8gb may get used

This pretty much sums it up - http://blog.logicalincrements.com/2016/01/gtx-970-vs-r9-390/

I would go with the 970 if 1080p gaming as well, its personal opinion, just buy what you like best, both cards are good and almost equal

What because there's loads of DX12 games and benchmark results out? I thought the only dx12 games have been canned or postponed recently.

How about comparing some current game benchmark results in 1080p
Well it still looking like a tread that 970 is falling behind the 390 in dx12.

If the OP is going to only play DX11 then fine but if he is going to keep the card into 2017/18 then I would go for 390/nano or wait until next gen but if he wants a 970 it is up to him as it is his own money.

If you like to heavily mod very demanding games then favour the 390, otherwise as far as I'm concerned it's a coin flip. In a vast majority of situations, the 390 (or any card) will run out of processing grunt long before the video memory really comes into question. :)

wow thanks for all the input i will have a good read and look at some bench marks. i just want the best card for the cash and the r9 390 is on offer at the moment for far less than the gtx 970 thats the main reason for that choice.

Personally I think seeing as you have a 4Gb 960 ssc already only moving up to a 970/390 is a bit pointless. I would be waitng a couple of months to see what the first round of new cards from AMD and NVidia bring as they could very well be in the same £300 bracket, if nothing else they will effect pricing of other cards.
